GREGORY

Small towns that used to have Post Offices and stores have gone by the wayside. As society moved from rural to urban, many towns and communities were left with few people. Post Offices were then closed and many towns were taken off the map. Many are just memories in the minds of the people who were born and grew up in them. The small town of Gregory, WV, located on the Little Kanawha River above Falls Mills is one of those towns. It no longer exists on a map and there are only two families presently living there.

James Vincent Gregory and his brother, Ike, built a store and Post Office around 1900. He worked in them until he died at about 59 years of age in May 1942. Alta Fisher was then Post Mistress 1943-45 and Charlie Fisher from 1945-52. Walter Martin Gregory, James’ son, and his wife, Myrtle Fisher, ran the store from the spring of 1943 until August of 1947. Oliver "Kate" Gregory then ran the store until 1949 and he closed it down and moved to Ohio. President Eisenhower closed the Post Office. The families began moving away and eventually only the big house and the store building were left. They still can be seen today. Don & Imogene Nichols bought the property from "Kate" Gregory and lived there several years. The present owner is Mrs. Stella Cogar.
