As a member of Gwent Family History Society, you can obtain the following benefits:-

bullet OUR QUARTERLY JOURNAL

This is published in March, June, September & December each year. It contains appropriate articles and information, and members may use it to express opinions, to ask for assistance and to publicise their own lines of research. In this way, many members have made contact with others researching the same name and even the same family, through the pages of our Journal.

Our Quarterly Journal is distributed free to members, but costs £3 to non-members. Its Editor positively thrives on contributions from any of our members, whether they are articles, letters for her to publish, or even the odd snippets of interest that can be included. These should be sent to our

Editor: 50 Queens Hill, Newport, Gwent NP20 5HJ
or e-mail [email protected]

The copy deadlines (for receipt of material) for issues are normally:

10th January   for March Journal
10th April   for June Journal
10th July   for September Journal
10th October   for December Journal

However, copy should be sent well before these dates to allow time for delivery and any editing that may be necessary, which the Editor reserves the right to carry out if required.

bullet MEMBERS' INTERESTS

A record is kept of the names being researched by members that they have advised us of, together with dates, places etc (subject to a maximum of ten surnames being recorded per member). These are published in the Journal as soon as possible after a member joins the Society, and they are also made available, on request, to other members who are researching the same name.

The Members' Interests Index is now available online, for more information, please see our separate page on Members' Interests.

Under the UK Data Protection Act of 1998, you must give us permission before we are allowed to publish any of this information, and to give this you have to complete a special Members Interests Form appropriately and sign it. This is why we cannot accept advice of Members Interests via GENfair and why, if you want to become an Overseas member and join using our GENfair facilities, we ask you not to include your Members Interests details when you join.

bullet ENQUIRY SERVICES AND OTHER FACILITIES

Most of our Enquiry Services can be used by our members for half the fees that non-members are charged.

And we also offer a range of further facilities, to help you with your researches, that are available to members only.

In both cases, please see our separate page on Enquiry Services.

HOW NEW MEMBERS CAN ADVISE THEIR INTERESTS

When you join our Society, you can complete the special form to submit your details at the same time as you submit your Application for Membership form.

You can print a copy of the special form for yourself by following the link to the Members Interests Form - this will appear on your screen as an Adobe .pdf file in A4 format. Alternatively, you can obtain one by asking the Membership Secretary when you ask for your Application for Membership form. In either case, please complete it according to the instructions on the form. When you have completed the form, please return it, with your Application for Membership form where applicable, to the Membership Secretary at the above address.

CHAPMAN COUNTY CODES AND COUNTRY CODES

To make it easier for you to advise us of your research interests, we have compiled a page showing all the Chapman County Codes for the British Isles, that are used in family history and genealogy. as accepted abbreviations when referring to counties, and also the Country Codes that are normally used.

HOW YOU CAN UPDATE YOUR INTERESTS

You can update your interests at any time (subject to a maximum of ten surnames in total per member).

You can do so by printing a fresh Members Interests Form, as described above, and completing it according to the instructions on the form. When completed, please return the form to the Membership Secretary at the above address. Please note that this update will replace all the previous details that had been recorded for your Members Interests, If you are therefore merely adding extra details, you will also need to reenter the exisitng details.
