COUNTY HALL
CWMBRÂN

The maps are based on the Ordnance Survey Get-a-map service and are
reproduced with permission of Ordnance Survey & Multi Media Mapping

BY ROAD

(For Train Services, Bus Services, and Local Accommodation, please see the foot of this page).

There are separate sets of instructions below to accompany the main road map (below left), depending on the direction you are travelling from:

BY ROAD FROM THE EAST (Severn Bridge and Gloucester)

BY ROAD FROM THE WEST (Cardiff and West Wales)

BY ROAD FROM THE NORTH (The Midlands and Mid Wales)

In all cases, after turning off the A4042(T), refer to the local area map (below right). You will see the County Police HQ on your right, before approaching the final roundabout. Turn right into County Hall, where there is free parking in ample numbers of terraced bays, and at the top of the rise.

Map of Local Roads

BY ROAD FROM THE EAST

  1. Exit from the M4 at Junction 25a using the dedicated exit lane IMMEDIATELY after Junction 25 (Caerleon) at the bottom of the hill.
The slip road soon merges with another slip road from the left. Stay in the right-hand lane and continue to the Grove Park roundabout (RE on the map)
  2. RE Grove Park:  Turn RIGHT (north), using the right-hand lane initially - the left-hand lane is a filter lane dedicated for use by traffic travelling from Newport Town Centre.
  3. R2 Croes-y-Mwyalch:  Ignore the sign for Cwmbran ahead, and turn RIGHT (north) following the sign for Abergavenny, again using the right-hand lane initially - the left-hand lane is another dedicated filter lane.
  4. R3 Crown Roundabout:  Again, ignore the sign for Cwmbran ahead and turn RIGHT (north) following the sign for Abergavenny.
  5. R4 Turnpike Roundabout:  At the top of the slight rise, turn off LEFT (west), signposted Police HQ and County Hall.
RETURN JOURNEY:
  1. Retrace the above route, following the signs for the M4.
  2. At R2 (Croes-y-Mwyalch) and at RE (Grove Park), use the left-hand lanes which in both cases are dedicated filter lanes.
  3. Immediately after exiting the roundabout RE (Grove Park), the two lanes merge into one briefly before a fork in the road. Ignore the left--hand fork, sign-posted Caerleon, and keep right onto the slip road, which becomes the inside lane of the M4.

BY ROAD FROM THE WEST

  1. Exit from the M4 at Junction 26 using the dedicated exit lane, taking you to the roundabout (RW on the map - controlled by traffic lights at peak hours).
  2. RW:  Turn LEFT (north) onto the dual carriageway, using the left-hand lane initially (this is a dedicated filter lane). Proceed up the hill, moving into the middle lane before the first of the six sets of traffic lights.
  3. R1 Woodlands:  Ignore the sign for Cwmbran to the left, and turn RIGHT (east) following the sign for Abergavenny.
  4. R2 Croes-y-Mwyalch:  Turn LEFT (north), using the left-hand lane (which is another dedicated filter lane).
  5. R3 Crown Roundabout:  Ignore the sign for Cwmbran ahead and turn RIGHT (north), again following the sign for Abergavenny.
  6. R4 Turnpike Roundabout:  At the top of the slight rise, turn off LEFT (west), signposted Police HQ and County Hall.
RETURN JOURNEY:
  1. Retrace the above route, following the signs for the M4.
  2. At R2 (Croes-y-Mwyalch), turn RIGHT (west) following the signs for Cardiff, using the right-hand lane initially - the left-hand lane is a filter lane dedicated for use by traffic travelling from Newport Town Centre.
  3. At R1 (Woodlands), turn LEFT (south) continuing to follow the signs for Cardiff. There is a 40 mph on this road, down to the roundabout (RW on the map - controlled by traffic lights at peak hours).

BY ROAD FROM THE North

  1. At the roundabout south-east of Abergavenny, turn South onto the A4042(T), sign-posted Newport and Cwmbran. At the turn-off for the A472 to Usk, the road becomes a dual carriageway.
  2. R9 & R8:  At the next two roundabouts, with minor turn-offs sign-posted to Mamhilad and New Inn respectively, continue AHEAD (South).
  3. R7:  At the roundabout for Pontypool, there are Services with a McDonalds and a petrol station. Bear LEFT (South), remaining on the A4042(T).

  5. R5:  At the next roundabout, with minor turn-offs sign-posted for Croesyceiliog and the Crematorium, continue AHEAD (South) on the A4042(T).
