FATHER OF CONTRACTOR WHO IS WRECKING FRENTZ SCHOOL MEETS DEATH EARLY THIS AFTERNOON.
Tragedy Halts the Work of Razing Historic Old Building on Winnebago Street-Victim of Accident is Fifty-Nine Years of Age-Skull Is Torn Open and End Comes Almost Instantaneously.
August Friedrich, 31 Fulton street, was struck by a falling wall at the Frentz school on Winnebago street this afternoon and almost instantly killed. Mr. Freidrich, who was fifty-nine years of age, was assisting in wrecking the building, the contract for which had been let by the city to his son, W. J. Friedrich.
A crew of men were at work on the second story and had loosened a small portion of the wall in the north entryway, which was being tipped over by the use of jacks. In some manner the wall failed to break evenly, twisted around and fell partly to the westward. In so doing it dislodged and tipped off a section on the northwest wall about ten feet by seven, consisting of brick and masonry. The elder Mr. Friedrich was standing close to the building on the west side at the extreme south end of the section which broke off.
The wall fell in such a way that a portion of it struck him on the head. His skull was torn open and death was almost instantaneous. When it was seen that the wall was falling, a warning was shouted, but Mr. Friedrich was unable to get out of the way in time. He was dead when workmen reached him. Dr. J. M. Conley was passing in his automobile and was called to examine the man. C. H. Marquardt was notified and the body was taken at once to his undertaking establishment on the south side of the river.
Mr. Friedrich was born in Germany and is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters, all of this city. The sons are William J. and Alfred Friedrich, and the daughters are Clara, Margaret and Lydia Friedrich. The funeral arrangements have not been made. The police department has been asked to warn people to keep away from the scene of the accident as other walls have been loosened and are liable to fall at any time.
