BOWRON Stephen
Oshkosh Daily Northwestern August 30, 1879
OBITUARY
STEPHEN BOWRON

News from Neenah beings the sad intelligence of the death of Stephen BOWRON, which occurred last evening about 6:30 o'clock, after an illness of about two weeks. In the death of Stephen BOWRON a good man has gone to his eternal resting place, and all who knew him share in the general regret at his untimely demise. He was born in Peru village, New York, on March 18th, 1823, and consequently at the time of his death was 56 years, 5 months and 11 days of age. When a youth he removed from the old homestead at Peru to Ohio where he spent a year or two working at the wagon maker's trade, and in 1849 came to Oshkosh where he had been attracted by two brothers who preceded him. He owned, with a brother, a tract of land in the town of Oshkosh, then Vinland, part of which remained in his possession as long as he lived and upon which he resided until 1875. He married in 1851, a daughter of Thomas KIMBALL, one of the pioneer settlers who lived about a half a mile south of his farm. In after years his strict honesty and unquestioned integrity led to his association with public affairs to a certain extent. From 1863 to 1870 he was elected consecutively as County Commissioner from the First Division under the old county commissioner system when the board of supervisors consisted of three members. In 1873 and 1874 he was again elected as a member of the County Board under the present supervisor system. In 1874 he was nominated by the Republicans of the First Assembly District as Member of Assembly, but he was defeated at the election by Gabe BOUCK, the Democratic nominee. In 1875 he removed to Neenah, and the same year was again elected to the County Board to represent the First Ward of Neenah. In 1876 he was nominated by the Republicans for County Treasurer and elected, serving one term. In the three cornered contest in 1878 a combination of Democrats and Greenbackers defeated him for reelection. On returning to his home in Neenah he opened a grocery business with Wm. KELLETT, in which he was engaged at the time of his death. In all his dealings and all his intercourse with men Stephen BOWRON made friends - never enemies. One leading trait in his character was that of honesty, and no man that lives can point to one blot or blemish in the purity of his life, honesty in dealing and personal integrity, however situated and under all circumstances. He was kind and considerate, self-sacrificing and indulgent in all his intercourse with his fellow men. He was one of nature's noblemen in all those qualities which go to make up a good citizen and a true friend. He was universally respected by all who knew him, and on every side those expressions of sorrow at his death are heard, that are fervently spoken when a truly good man dies. He leaves a wife, a son and daughter. He was a member of the Royal Arcanum, in which he holds a policy of insurance for $3,000. The funeral announcement is given elsewhere.
