SANDERS James
Oshkosh Daily Northwestern April 7, 1879
DEATH OF DEACON SANDERS

James, SANDERS, father-in-law of A. G. RANDALL, died Saturday night, at the advanced age of 83 years. Mr. SANDERS was an old settler, having come here in 1856. About 15 years ago he got a rusty nail in his foot, and after suffering for two years, had to have the foot amputated. His suffering broke down his constitution and he has been an invalid ever since. He was a man much respected by all who knew him. Honor and integrity was a ruling trait in his character, and he ever felt a lively interest in the religious and moral welfare of the city. He was a member of the Second Baptist church of this city, and had been a worthy member of that denomination for more than sixty years. At the time of his death he was probably the oldest Mason in the state, having been raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in 1824. One child only survives him, a maiden daughter whose devotion to her father since the death of her mother in 1856, has been constant and untiring.

The funeral will take place to-morrow, Tuesday, afternoon, at two o'clock, from the residence, 135 Algoma street.

ARTICLE - AUNT ANLAUG

Mrs. Anlaug (Mork) Sauby, a pioneer resident of Central Wisconsin died February 22, 1946 at the age of 86 years. This news item, which came from Winchester yesterday, may be of interest to many readers. Mrs. Sauby was only one of the great company of unsung and anonymous thousands who came from the old world some 80 years ago to carve a new life kout of the wilderness of a new continent. But to this writer, she was a very dear and the two words, "Aunt Anlaug" bring back to me many pleasant memories!

Aunt Anlaug always had a filled cookie jar for nephew, niece, or grandchild and she always had a wonderful table heaped with goodies when relatives were invited at holidays or special family occasion.

Aunt Anlaug had the self reliance and resourcefulness of the pioneer. She came to this country from Telemarken, Norway, with her father and mother at the age of two years and it took eight weeks on a saling vessel to make the trip across the Atlantic.

Following her marriage, she came to Winchester in 1881, the very year Rev. Homme, the pastor at Winchester, started his works of mercy at Wittenberg. She made the trip from Iola to Winchester in a lumber wagon. And so, Aunt Anlaug has seen the railroad, the telephone, the automobile, the radio, the aeroplane and other marvels of science come to her community in the long span of life that was alloted her.

Not so long ago she made several trips of 140 miles by car to visit a sick sister. The last two weeks of her sister's life, Aunt Anlaug sat faithfully by her sister's bedside and read the Word of God, prayed and sang the good old Norwegian hymns such as "Bedre kan jeg ikke fare" "Tnk naar jeg engang samles skal" and others.

Aunt Anlaug was a devout Christian, a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church of Winchester and an active Ladies' Aid member.

Two weeks ago, still trying to help along with the household duties, she became seriously ill. The remaining strength of her once sturdy body seeped away as she fell into her last sleep, a sleep in Jesus. And now a last and reverent farewell to Aunt Anlaug. SIGNED: M.T.L.

STARR William
Oshkosh Daily Northwestern April 19, 1879
OBITUARY
Death of Hon. Wm. STARR of Ripon.

A dispatch from Ripon last evening announced the death of Hon. Wm. STARR, President of the Normal School Regents, which occurred about four o'clock yesterday afternoon. Mr. STARR died from a violent attack of erysipelas which went to the brain. He had been sick about ten days and during most of that time he had been delirious and irrational. Three days before he died he seemed to grow better and was in his right mind for some hours, but a relapse set in which finally carried him off. The funeral will take place to-morrow at 3 o'clock p.m. S. M. HAY, the faculty at the Normal School and others desiring to attend the funeral have telegraphed for a special train from here to Ripon to-morrow, but at this writing no definite answer has been received.

William STARR was one of the pioneer educators of Wisconsin and his long connection with the Board of Normal School Regents of the state, of which he has been president for some years, has made his name and reputation widespread among students and educators as well as through the public press. He was born at Middletown, Connecticut, March 3, 1821. His father died three months before William was born, from the effects of over-exertion and exposure during a freshet in the Connecticut River. Mrs. STARR a few years after married again, and William, at the age of fourteen, started out for himself in life. He worked on a farm and read books at spare hours and saved up enough to attend some of the higher grade of schools. He soon secured a position as teacher and followed that occupation during the winter and worked on the farm in the summer. About 1845 he removed to Ripon, in this state, and married a lady whose maiden name was Annie STRONG. Having been a leading advocate in establishing the present system of Normal Schools in this state, he was appointed one of the first Regents, and has held that office continually until the time of his death. He had been one of the trustees of Ripon College ever since its organization. He was a staunch member of the Episcopal Church, and of low-church proclivities. During all his connection with public offices of an educational nature he has never made politics a feature of his life, although a Republican since the organization of that party. He was a man of spotless reputation and strict integrity. He made himself a model for the students and men of education with whom he came in contact, and was universally beloved by all who knew him. In his death the Normal Schools of this state have lost a firm defender, society an upright member, and the city in which he lived an honored citizen.

The Daily Northwestern [Oshkosh, Wisconsin] Friday Evening, July 31, 1931
VETERAN SURGEON, PHYSICIAN, PASSES AWAY AT HOSPITAL
Dr. George M. Steele, 83, Dies Following Illness of About a Year - Funeral Will be Held Sunday

Dr. George M. Steele, oldest practicing physician and surgeon both in point of age and service, and at one time also one of the best-known, died about midnight Thursday at Mercy hospital. He was 83 years old.

He was a victim of heart disease and complications incidental to old age , and illness had kept him a semi-invalid during most of the last year. He was at the hospital several weeks.

Dr. Steele's death ended a medical career which began in Oshkosh 60 years ago and had been continued up to within a comparatively short time before his death.

He engaged in general practice in the days when "the family doctor" visited the patients at their homes almost exclusively and when the horse and buggy were the common mode of conveyance. Later he branched out into surgery and still later specialized in treatment of patients by electricity and X-ray.

He and Mrs. Steele were prominent socially and the doctor was successful in a number of real estate ventures, one of which was the erection of Frontenac flats on High street in which enterprise he was associated with his brother-in-law Edward Wickwire. During his later years he resided in that apartment building and at the last he conducted his office there.

TAKES EUROPEAN TRIP

Since the death of Mrs. Steele he had lived a more retired and secluded life, but a few years ago he made a trip to Europe where he took advanced work in a specialized branch of medical healing. While but little is known of the latter span of years, even by his relatives, notes in the archives of the city and county attest to the prominence he formerly occupied.

Mr. Steele was born August 23, 1847, in St. Lawrence county, New York. His parents, Elija and Emily Ward Steele were natives of Massachusetts. The came to Wisconsin in 1834 and located on a farm in Green Lake county, near Berlin. They remained there two years and then came to Winnebago county, residing on a farm in the town of Nepeuskun.

The boy, George Monroe, attended the district schools and entered Ripon college, graduating as a member of the 18th class of that institution. While a student there, he determined to study medicine, and after graduation entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons at New York City. He finished in the spring of 1871 and returned immediately to Oshkosh to open his practice.

For some time he practiced in partnership with the late Dr. T. P. Russell.

Mrs. Steele, who died 10 years ago was Miss Mary E. Wickwire before her marriage, a member of a pioneer family here and the daughter of William Wickwire (my note -- this is wrong -- father was Ezra Wickwire). They were married April 6, 1871.

They had no children and Dr. Steele's only surviving relatives, except those distantly connected are nephews and nieces.

Mrs. Frank B. Keefe, wife of the district attorney, is a niece. Sterling Steele, her brother lives at Berlin. Others are Frank E. Steele, Ripon, Mrs. Ida Wood, of Wamego, Kan., Mrs. Florence Hall, of Palo Alto, Calif., and Syd Gordon of Kansas City, Mo. A sister-in-law also survives. She is Mrs. E. L. Wickwire of New York, wife of Mrs. Steele's brother and sister of Nathan and Edward W. Paine of this city.

With Mr. Steele's death there remain only two charter members of the Centennial lodge. No. 205 of the Masonic Order. They are R. C. Brown and Samuel Gilliford.

The doctor for many years had been connected with medical societies of local, state, and national scope and assumed active interest in their affairs. He belonged to the Winnebago County Medical society.

Several years ago he was awarded a watch fob set with a beautiful large diamond in recognition of 40 years of service as medical examiner for the Metropolitan Life Insurance company.

HOME SOLD TO CITY

The home which Dr. Steele occupied for many years on Algoma boulevard was sold to the city as a portion of the site for the Vocational school building when that was constructed almost 10 years ago.

Services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the First Congregational church. Dr. Silas Evans of Ripon college , Rev. Edward H. Smith and Dr. David F. Bent officiating. The remains will be placed in the family Mausoleum in Riverside cemetery. Masonic rites also will be held.

Friends of the pioneering physician are following what they know would be his wishes in not arranging to have the body lie in state in a public place. The casket will be open in church. A final note written by Dr. Steele directed that the funeral be conducted in a simple manner.
