AQUATIC PLANT EXPERT, MUCHA, IS FOUND DEAD

Joseph Mucha, 67, who studied water plants while recovering from an accident and later became a recognized authority on the subject, was found dead at his 141 N. Lake St. home along Little Lake Butte des Morts Sunday noon.

Funeral services for Mucha, an outspoken critic of industrial water pollution and advocate of Civil Defense, are scheduled at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Westgor Funeral Home.

Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 p.m. Tuesday until the hour of service Wednesday.

Mucha "farmed" the waters of the lake, growing water chestnuts and other aquatic plants, and sold them to oriental foods dealers. He authored a book, "Aquatic Plant Life and Their Valuation."

The Austrian-born immigrant came to this country in 1914, and worked at Kimberly-Clark Corporation until a back injury invalided him for several years. It was while he was recuprrating that he began his interest in water plants.

His fear that industrial wastes might harm his plants resulted in lengthy campaigns to prevent pollution. He also was well known as a Civil Defense supporter, and was an ardent stamp collector.

He was born March 9, 1894. For the past 34 years, he lived in Neenah. He was a member of the Neenah Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Leonard Ihrig, Winneconne, and Mrs. Russell Neshek, Menasha, and four grandchildren.

Because of all her involvement in activities with family, friends and associates, Marge had an impact on more people than she ever realized. She will forever live on in the hearts of everyone she touched. The family wishes to extend its appreciation to the staff of Appleton Medical Center for their loving care of our mom.

In the corner of our hearts is a place called memory, where we can go to find comfort. Though the ones we love may leave life as we know it, in our memory the love we knew will always carry on.
