Early History Of Breed
Mr. Johnson also told how they would stretch buckskin on a hollow log or stump for drums using a mallet made of wood and buckskin one could hear their drumming for miles. They would train the young Indian men for war by music and dancing. This would last three days and nights and those who withstood it that length of time would be considered good soldiers. Mr. Johnson and his wife often visited their camp and spent the evening with them. He learned from them they chopped marks or burned spots on trees along their trail so the other Indians knew where to go and so they could retrace their steps and not get lost. I had often wondered why an Indian pony did not wander away at night from camp but Mr. Johnson tells me the Indians would tie their front legs together so they could only hobble therefore they could not wander away.

(please note: Archeologists and historians have proven the following statement to be incorrect, The Menominee were indigenous to the Green Bay of Lake Michigan. Their ancestral burials go back more than 7,000 years and they were here in 1634 when Nicollet landed at Green Bay. The Oneida and Stockbridge Indians, completely separate and unrelated to the Menominee, came from the Eastern US as white settlement expanded into their original homelands.) Do you know the Menominee Indians came from New York? A confederacy of five nations of Iroquoian tribes organized in New York in 1570. The Oneida tribe, of which the Menominee is a part, is the only tribe who fought for us during the Revolutionary War. These Indians were above the average in intelligence. There is another Thomas C. Johnson, no relative of J.P., Nel' or Christ Johnson, who lived near Breed in those early days, now living with his daughter, Mrs. Jos. Ziereis. We cannot learn much about him as his memory is not very clear. T.C. Johnson has been in bed for the past ten years, he is 98 years old. Across Anderson creek, on the Ziereis farm, is an Indian mound. If you have ever been where it is thickly wooded or thought you were lost in a swamp, one would have an idea what it was like around Breed 50 years ago, and just think today we have highway 32 automobiles, radio telephones and railroads. There were two TC Johnson's and two Christ Johnson's in that same area. That is why when I think I have something it turns out to be the "other".

27. George Ziereis was born on 9 Aug 1896 in Town Of Armstrong, Oconto County, Wisconsin, died on 11 May 1990 in Embarrass, WI at age 93, and was buried in Union Free Cemetery, Breed, WI.

General Notes: George never married.

He enlisted to serve in WW1 but was soon discharged due to poor eye sight. He logged with his family for many years and then moved to Sturgeon Bay and worked in the ship yards. He worked at Manitowoc and at Peterson's Ship Building in Sturgeon Bay. He may have had sea legs to build the ships but he never knew how to swim. In fact he was afraid of water and drowning. He told me a story once or twice about a fishing trip he had gone on with Mike (my grandfather) on Lake Michigan. They were in a small boat off the tip of Door County going towards Washington Island when a gale blew in and they were almost sunk. After that Uncle George feared any water ways.

When George retired he lived with my parents Richard and Agnes Ziereis in Embarrass for several years. He helped Rich in the Body Shop and tended to a very large garden which helped feed the 3 adults and seven children.

The Snake Slayer

As a small girl I loved to climb a certain pine tree in the woods in the back of our home. One evening after supper I did just that, climbing as high as I could until I came face to face with a big old pine snake, him staring me right in the face. I almost immediately dropped to the ground and although a bit banged up found Uncle George and told him about this huge snake, to me it was big enough to swallow me whole.

Uncle George looked for that snake for many weeks and had seen it was going through the garden and it was leaving a large trail. One day he did catch it in the garden and it took several blows to kill it. It was as long as he was tall. George hated snakes which I had always thought most people did not like them.

It came to light years later when he was living in the old homestead at Anderson Lake and I was also living there with my 3 children after a divorce.
My daughter Shannon feared no animal, and was always collecting and dragging them home. One day she came in with a pail of grass snakes. Uncle George who never raised his voice yelled at her to get them out of the house and to dump them way back in the field. Well, Shannon did as she was told a bit upset. Later that day Uncle George told her a story of something that happened when he was young. A little boy was put to bed one night and kept yelling something was picking him. His parents checked his bed and found nothing and this went on until he fell asleep. The next morning he was dead. There was a snake inside his quilt that must have crawled in through a small hole. A True story and a very frightening one at that. I still hate snakes!

George always made a large garden, to large for the 4 of us so we were always giving away fresh vegetables. This goes with the old adage when zucchini is ripe lock your doors! He was a meat and potato person and his potato patch took up over half the garden. He had potato's sometimes 3 meals a day. If I was not boiling a pot a day he would do it himself. He had a special way of doing his potato's so they were nice and firm for his favorite, “fried” potatoes. Good thing he never lived in Ireland!

When the new highway 32 went through the middle of the land of the homestead he was very upset about it and protested them cutting down an over 200 year old White Oak. With many confrontations with the construction company he finally was forced to give in, but he made his garden right to the edge of the line marking his property and with hoe in hand he was out there every day making sure the bull dozers and work men did not cross that line or disturb his potato patch. It was a funny site, they would wave at him standing there and he shaking that hoe, protecting what was his.

George eventually in old age could no longer drive and he was brought back to Embarrass to live in an apartment where we could keep an eye on him. His favorite pass time was sitting by the front window, fly swatter in hand waving at the cars going by. Or maybe he was still protecting his property!
