Peter E Doty
Peter E Doty was born in New York in May 1826, and was, at the time of his
death, aged 88 years, 2 months and 16 days. On April 5th 1851
united in marriage to Rhoda C Webster, who survives him; to this union
there were born 5 children; Andrew, James, Mary, Frank and Rhoda, two of
whom James and Mary, preceded their father to the grave. He came to
Wisconsin in 1861, settling at Rhode’s Corners, now Medina. When his
country called for volunteers to preserve the Union, he enlisted in
Company E, 42nd Wisconsin Infantry and served until he was
honorably discharged on account of disability; he shortly afterwards moved
to the town of Dupont and became a genuine pioneer; he was 24 miles from
the nearest store and there were only two other settlers in that
territory. About 17 years ago (he) moved to Tigerton and in 1904 came to
Hawkins, residing here until his death.
Peter E Doty was a man of strong character and convictions. He was of that
rugged honesty so often found in the pioneers of our country; as a young
man he united with the Methodist church and for about 60 years was a
devout Christina; he died full in faith of the power of Christ to save. A
good Christian, a loving husband and loyal citizen, he had earned the love
and respect of all, and to him it was given in full measure.
