This
Library has a reference room called the Wisconsin Room. It has a
collection of newspapers on microfilm along with books and pamphlets
regarding the county's history. And we have a new "Kindred Spirit"
there, working at the library --
Mikki emailed me the
following information:
- PAMPHLET FILES: Includes articles from
local newspaper arranged by topic; Personalities, awards,
happenings in townships in Shawano county, churches, etc.
- OLD CHURCH DIRECTORIES: From the 1940's,
etc.
- PLAT BOOKS: Included in our pamphlet area,
we have plat books for the following years: 1958, 1960, 1966,
1968, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1990,
1992, 1995. There were 2 with no date. One looks to be around the
mid 50's the other maybe early 60's.
- SHAWANO CITY DIRECTORIES: For the following
years: 1950, 1955, 1962, 1965, 1969, 1970, 1972, 1974-77, 1980-82,

The "Wisconsin Room" may be typical of any in
Wisconsin libraries, at least the smaller ones. There are books
about the history of Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Blue book back to the
late 1800's, Wisconsin census enumeration for 1895 part 3 and 1905
part 3. There are Centennials from Shawano and some books written by
local historians as well. There are quite a few family histories
available as well as books to help you learn how to do your
research. We can order microfilm as well.
Thanks, Mikki, for updating our site! Mikki also says that she is
able to do LIMITED look-ups in reference books, etc. at the
library. Let's not overwhelm our latest "kindred spirit" -- please
limit your requests to one per email and also be specific as to what
you want looked-up and in which book...and Mom's Rule #1 applies
here! (Always say thank-you!) |

the history of immigrants, lumberjacks and early farmers who settled
this area of Wisconsin. Sunset Island, located in the Shawano Lake

tables. Tours begin at the Registration Center which has displays
of children's pictures, depicting the fashions worn by children of
early pioneer families, and a collection of early Main Street
pictures. Tours continue through the vintage John Kast home of
1871, to view its late 19th century furnishings; a One-Room Country
School; a restored pioneer log cabin; a dairy building with Shawano
