Sailed for France June 12, 1917, on first trip with troops. Made thirteen trips across and also saw service picking mines in the Bay of Biscay, France, and at Vera Cruz, Mexico. Honorably discharged July 29, 1918, and re-enlisted for duration of the war. Promoted to rank of Boatswain. Mustered out December 26, 1918.

Born at Plymouth, Wisconsin, February 11, 1895. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bruegger, Ladysmith, Wisconsin. Graduated from Ladysmith High School. Entered service at Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 31, 1918. Trained at Great Lakes, and at Hampton Roads, Virginia. Transferred from Hampton Roads to "U.S.S. Arizona", July 28, 1919. Cruised to England and France in 1918. Later spent several months at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Cruised to Trinidad Island, B. W. I., and Smyrna, Asia Minor, landing a company of Marines to protect our interests there at the time of the Greek occupation of the city. A short stay in Constantinople complete the cruise. Transferred to "U.S.S. Pastores" a transport, on July 1, 1919, and served until October 13, 1919, making two trips, one to St. Nazaire and one to Brest, France. Mustered out October 31, 1919.

Trained at Great Lakes, and Navy Rifle Range, Camp Logan, Illinois. Transferred to Navy Rifle Range, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Saw service on board the "Pennsylvania" and the destroyer "Gamble". Ill at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, two weeks, tonsils removed. Promoted to rank of Heavy Gun Pointer, 1st Class. Mustered out January 8, 1919.

Was in 17 submarine engagements, not on boat officially accredited but on scene at time three were sunk. Ill with bronchial pneumonia, April 26 to May 14, 1918, at New London, Conn. Promoted to rank of Radio, 2nd class. Mustered out July 23, 1919.

Trained at Great Lakes, Sailed for France July 10, 1918, stationed at Brest. Returned to U.S. January 15, 1919. Ill with pneumonia, August 8 to 29, 1918, Liverpool, England. Released April 7, 1919.

Made one trip to Archangel, Russia, via the Panama Canal and Puget Sound, where he was stationed three months, later stationed at Bay Ridge, New York. Ill with Flu in December 1918, at Bay Ridge, New York. Mustered out August 13, 1919.

Trained at Newport, Rhode Island. Sailed for France on May 17, 1918. Saw patrol service on "U.S.S. Topeka" and the "Kimberly". Was in engagements with U-boats on two occasions. Ill in Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, September to December. 1917. Returned to U.S. January 8, 1919. Mustered out December. 14, 1919.
