Alfred Sandquist moved to Brantwood with his parents and siblings in 1897 from Minnesota. His parents, Johan and Kattarina Sandquist, were Swedish immigrants who settled in Minnesota about 1881.

Matilda's parents, Nels and Mary Thorbus, were Norwegian immigrants who settled in Minnesota in 1881. In 1901 they relocated to Brantwood.

Matilda and Alfred met, married and raised their family in Brantwood (Knox Mills).
