The Town of Sturgeon Bay was originally called Otumba for its beginnings and is referenced as that in MARTIN's History of 1881. This index is referenced as "Town of Sturgeon Bay (Otumba)" to clarify its current name and to avoid confusion. Added clarifications, for instance state or county references, have been added in italics for researchers when known. Much of the information that is in MARTIN's History of Door County is included here in this index but put in sequence by date.
Chas. I. MARTIN was not infallible, there are some errors in his volume. However, his History of Door County is a wonderful resource-as a starting place for family researchers in early Door County. Please use it as a starting place to do research through records.
Whenever a transcription is made, errors are possible. Because of that I hope you will check MARTIN's "HISTORY of DOOR COUNTY-1881" original pages.-Sue HOHNEKE

(Mr.)/probably the first white settler that located on the banks of Sturgeon Bay, settled on the point, on the west side of the bay in 1835, remained for 4 or 5 years making a small clearing in wood and fishing, 1840 he went to Two Creeks or Sandy Bay, Kewaunee County "when the war broke out" (1861-Civil War); soldier, drummer boy in War of 1812-stationed at Sackett's Harbor; enlisted as drummer in the Manitowoc and Kewaunee Union Rifles, afterward Co. E. 14th Wis.
