JULY 2009 - THANK YOU, BECKY JACOBS!

Becky JACOBS, daughter of Bob and Sue HOHNEKE, on vacation from New Mexico where she lives with her hubby and four boys, helped her Mom work on Town of Nasewaupee Cemetery!

Click on these pictures to see them enlarged!

The In ground stone for Hedwig WOBSER was found by Becky (HOHNEKE) JACOBS who was visiting from New Mexico, on 2 Jul 2009.  It had been missing at least since the 2002 Index.  As Becky was working ahead of her Mom, Sue HOHNEKE, she was cleaning and clearing stones so the best pictures could be taken.  Only water is used to do this process and a little elbow grease.  However, after Becky noticed a small corner of a stone peeking out of the ground in the WOBSER Family Plot in Section 3, she has more than a little work ahead of her to make the stone viewable for picture-taking.  The stone had sunk in the ground at an angle that was about 6 inches deep on the lower end of the stone.  Lots of water and wiping with towels had to be done after the initial digging was done to make the name and dates legible once more.  We got some great pictures of Hedwig's stone thanks to the hard work done by Becky that July morning.  What a way to spend a vacation!

Below:  Herman WOBSER's stone was also dug out but his was not far down and just needed a bit of sod removed.

The next challenging part of the WOBSER Family Plot to be tackled was the WOBSER Family column stone which was on its side in foliage.  The culprit that probably toppled the stone was a lilac bush that had grown to tree size:

*WOBSER FAMILY HISTORY

After some research it was found that Albert WOBSER had his biography printed in the "Commemorative Biographical Record of the Counties of Brown, Kewaunee and Door, Wisconsin.." (1895) (see index to biographies found in this book on our PGS website!)

From that biography we learned that Albert, born in Pomerania, Prussia, emigrated to America in 1861 probably with his mother Caroline (KUHTER) WOBSER who was left a widow when her husband John died in 1860.  They resided in Canada (he worked as a shoemaker in Toronto, Ontario and at the butcher business).  Albert went to Chicago, IL and then on to Milwaukee where he engaged in the shoe business.

"In January, 1865, he enlisted in Company F. Forty-fifth Regiment, Wis. V. I. (Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry), and was a member of the detachment of the army of the Cumberland which was stationed at Nashville, Tenn., on picket duty and guarding the trains.  He was honorably discharged as sergeant in 1865 at Nashville, and returned to Milwaukee" (marrying Miss Charlotta, daughter of Karl DOMMER, in 1866-both from Germany) where he continued in business until 1869 till he bought 320 acres in Forestville, Door County.

Albert's mother Caroline (KUHTER) WOBSER (on stone in Schumacher Cem. - see above photo) died in Door County as he mentions in his biography: "She was a strong healthy woman, and a very hard worker; her death occurred in September 1891" (stone shows her death date as 10 Sep 1889!-no OBITUARY!)", when she was aged seventy-eight years.  She had but one child, Albert."

Albert and Charlotte lived in the Town of Forestville, Door County, from 1869 to 1873 along with his mother Caroline.  Moved back to Milwaukee in 1873 till 1875 where he worked his shoe business. They then moved back to farm once again as they settled on 160 acres in the Town of Nasewaupee, Door County in Section 36.  The land he owned in the Town of Nasewaupee was all woods and he took to the task of clearing the land and preparing for cultivation.

Albert and Charlotte had seven children:  Hans (who operated a cheese factory), Hugo, Hermann, Henry, Herbert, Helen and Hedwig (according to the bio.)  Of all the WOBSER Family, Albert, his mother Caroline, his wife Charlotte, son Herbert and his wife Ida, Herman and Hedwig are the family on stones in Schumacher Cemetery.  However, according to the Obituary for Hans WOBSER, (Door County Advocate-30 Nov 1950) he is also buried in Town of Nasewaupee-Schumacher Cemetery.  Hans WOBSER was unmarried-born 18 Mar 1868 in Milwaukee and died in Nov 1950).

More research is being done on the WOBSER Family and will be posted here in the future:  Please contact the PGS at [email protected] if you have further information/photos to contribute or if you are a WOBSER descendant and would like the family history information we have gathered!  We would love to hear from you!
