Peninsula Genealogical Society

The following is a descendancy including some pictures of the BAGNALL Family, who originated in Dublin Ireland and came to Door County via Canada in the mid to late 1800's. These photos of her ancestors were contributed by Ginny HAEN. The first four generations descending from John BAGNALL who was born and died in Ireland in 1837 are included so far. One of John’s sons, with family, immigrated to Frampton, Quebec in 1835, where he lived and died. All four of the next generation removed to Door County, Wisconsin between 1860 and 1885.

DEATH: will proved in 1837 (Brian Smith, researcher, 48 Clarinda Park East, Dun Laoghaire, Co

Dublin, Ireland in a letter dated 4 May 1998 to Max Andrae); he tells that a copy of will is not held

at National Archives in Ireland according to surviving Wills index.

COMMENTS: info from will of John Bagnall dated 28 Dec 1836, Dublin Ireland; George Bagnall

(Jacksonport WI) has original, Ginny Haen has a copy. The 1833 Dublin Directory lists J Bagnall,

grocer, George street, Kingstown and also lists his son George as grocer and provision dealer,

George's street, Kingstown. In 1835 John is listed on Georges St as a "grocer and spirit dealer"

while the Old Dunleary address was "grocer and provision dealer." By 1844, only his daughter

Rebecca is listed at that address as postmistress, 1856 lists Rebecca at 119 George's street, lr.

Kingstown, no mention of type of business.

George Bagnall has original, Ginny Haen has a copy--will implies that Robert is to

be in the care of his sister Rebecca, executrix of will; also land transaction

between John Bagnall (grantor) and John Reid (grantee) dated 16 July 1833

which seems to describe same parcel of property mentioned in the above

mentioned will--FHL film # 469005, vol 12, p 78--this source states that Robert is

the eldest son of John Bagnall.

ii. Rebecca Bagnall. She was born Abt. 1796 in ,,Ireland. She died on 20 Mar 1862 in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. Burial in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, Mt Jerome Cem.

Prescott of No. 9 Great Brunswick St Dublin Jeweller) Niece of deceased the

Dublin were granted at the Principal Registry to Anne Prescott (Wife of John

Prescott of No. 9 Great Brunswick St Dublin Jeweller) Niece of deceased the

Residuary Legatee." The will no longer exists at the Principal Registry. Her

effects were under 200 pounds.

BUR: communication with researcher Brian Smith (48 Clarinda Park East, Dun

Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, Ireland) in letter to Max Andrae dated 4 May 1998;

Rebecca Bagnall, died 20 March 1862, age 66 yrs, plot # A1-277--plot was never

bought and therefore has no headstone.

COMMENTS: from will of John Bagnall dated 28 Dec 1836, Dublin Ireland;

George Bagnall has original, Ginny Haen has a copy; also land transaction

between Rebecca Bagnall (grantor) and Mary Ward (grantee) dated 26 March

1860 describing same parcel of property mentioned in the above mentioned

will--FHL film # 559917, vol 10, p 22.

3. iv. George Smyth Bagnall. He was born on 01 Mar 1808 in St. Catherine's Parish, Dublin, Ireland [1]. He married Mary Tolerton. They were married Abt. 1827 in Dublin, Ireland [2]. He died on 05 Sep 1870 in Frampton, Quebec, Canada [3, 4]. Burial in St. Paul's Church, Hemison, St. Malachie, Bellechasse, PQ [5].

MARR: possibly wife Elisa (from death certificate)

DEATH: FHL film # 101645 deaths District of Grand Canal Street, South Dublin Union, County

Dublin: a Thomas Bagnall of 7 Pitt Street, a married male, age 72 years, occupation clerk, died

from affection of the head (12 hours) certified, Elisa Bagnall (X her mark) was present at

death--also 7 Pitt Street; Thomas died 20 Jan 1866. Thomas Bagnall, father of Anne Bagnall

Prescott (married 1846), was listed as a bookkeeper, which seems to be compatible with clerk.

Another Thomas Bagnall died in Sept 1868, aged 66, but his occupation was cardriver & owner

(also in Dublin South, but District of Donnybrook--FHL film # 101687). To add to mystery, another

supposed a daughter, Jane married Richard Clegg in 1848; her father Thomas was listed as

deceased. Now who is our Thomas? And is Jane Bagnall surely a daughter of our Thomas? The

circumstantial evidence is that Richard Clegg was a witness at wedding of John Prescott and Ann

Bagnall, along with George Smyth Bagnall, but more proof should be found.

original, Ginny Haen has a copy; also land transaction between John Bagnall (grantor) and John

i. Anne Bagnall. She married John Prescott. They were married on 30 Jul 1846 in Parish of St. Mary's, Dublin, Ireland [6].

spinster of full age, a governess, lived at 11 Mary's Abbey, was a daughter of

Thomas Bagnall, bookkeeper; marriage took place by banns at St Mary's Church,

Parish of St Mary, City of Dublin; in the presence of George Smyth Bagnall and

Richard Clegg by Curate Daniel Mooney.

ii. Jane Bagnall. She married Richard Clegg. They were married on 22 Apr 1848 in Monkstown, Dublin, Ireland [7].

3. George Smyth Bagnall-2 (John Bagnall-1). He was born on 01 Mar 1808 in St. Catherine's Parish, Dublin, Ireland [1]. He died on 05 Sep 1870 in Frampton, Quebec, Canada [3, 4]. Burial in St. Paul's Church, Hemison, St. Malachie, Bellechasse, PQ [5].

General Notes:

CENSUS: 1842 census shows the George Bagnall family in Pointe Levi (5 people which would be

George, Mary, sons George, Sam and John Tolerton--4 people are Church of England and 1 is

Quaker--that would be Mary); 1851 census missing for Frampton; 1861 census (Frampton,

Dorchester, Quebec) lists George as a shopkeeper.

COMMENTS: George was a grocer in Dublin, then went to Canada where he had a store and

trading business; the stories tell that after several shipwrecks he decided to sell that business and

become a farmer near Frampton, thirty miles southeast of Quebec; in his father's will his middle

name is spelled "Smith."

Mary Tolerton is the daughter of John Tolerton and Elizabeth Calvert. She was born on 15 Jul 1803 in Dublin, Ireland [8]. She died on 14 Mar 1860 in Frampton, Quebec, Canada [9]. Burial in St. Paul's Church, Hemison, St. Malachie, Bellechasse, Quebec [10].

COMMENTS: Mary and George seem to have been very religious people by the writings in the

family Bible; Mary apparently was a Sunday School teacher; Ginny Haen has a photo of a

sampler with Mary Tolerton stitched on it, presumably done by her; she seemed to have strong

influence over her husband as evidenced in this excerpt from a letter from Mary to George found

pasted and initialed by GSB in the family Bible in 1859, "I was grieved when I saw in the letter you

had whiskey to sell, it is a great trouble to my mind. I will never be reconciled for you or any of

our family to have anything to do with the sale of it, I will say no more now but I trust in God it will

not continue. My dear George the blessing of God maketh truly rich and we cannot expect a

blessing on the sale of what is the cause of so much misery and crime. From thy affectionate

wife, MB"

Frampton, who died June 25, 1856. (page 130, deaths of the St. Joseph de Beauce records).

Was this the husband of Elizabeth Sterne? There is no death listed for Elizabeth in this

document.

COMMENTS: Harry died of typhoid fever; he was listed as a farmer on his death

certificate, though his obit said he had just opened a business near the railroad;

this Maple Ridge does not exist anymore, it is now Rock in upper MI--there is a

also Maple Ridge in lower MI.

19. iv. John Rutherford Bagnall. He was born on 22 Jan 1876 in Jacksonport, Door, WI. He married Amelia Lodge Smith. They were married on 26 Nov 1902 in Jacksonport, Door, WI. Vital Records, Orphan's Court, Record of Deaths # 1 1892-1906, Potter Co PA; also same film,

Record of Births # 1 1893-1906).

From film 902434, we learn that Mildred's mother was Marie Vopal, born Germany; died 9 Sep

1897, age 43, buried Costello, Potter, PA; no parents listed; died of typhoid fever; marr or sgl?

He began having brain seizures about six months ago and they became progressively worse. He was 50. After cremation there will be a small service in Florida on Friday and then a larger one on Nov. 11 at the Methodist Church in Edgerton, Wis. Paul was the custodian at this church before he and Ruth moved to Florida in 1999. Survivors include his mother, two brothers, two sisters, and 17 nieces and nephews.

Nicole is attending Moore College of Art in Philadelphia. They are taking an extended honeymoon to travel throughout the country this summer. They were headed to the state of Washington to do some mountain climbing on Mt. Whitney. Nicole and Rick plan to meet Marilyn and Bob later in the summer to do some white river rafting. They will be at home when school begins at 326 Cherry Lane, Haverstown, PA 19038. Nicole was born 2-10-77 at Nazareth Hospital in Philadelphia. I was able to get a few names of her ancestors that I will try to forward from my family tree file. Yvonne".
