Censuses were taken by the state of Wisconsin from 1836 when it was a territory, until 1905. The 1836, 1838, 1842, 1846, 1847, 1855, 1875, 1885, 1895 and the surviving fragments of the 1865 censuses resemble the early federal censuses, listing only the head of a household by name and summarizing the number of others. The 1905 census was the only state census in Wisconsin to list all the members of a household by name.
You should be able to request a census through a Family History Center, or by interlibrary loan from your local library.
This is a copy of the 1855 state census for the county of Marathon, Wisconsin. This county was later split into Lincoln County in 1874, Taylor County in 1875, Price County in 1879, Oneida County in 1885, and Vilas County in 1893.
I have tried to enter the names as I could read them – the copy was faint, and the handwriting bad, and also phonetic spelling was used.
This was counted June 1, 1855. The enumerator was P. N. Calkins, Assistant Town Clerk.
Another idea – I assume that the large quantities of white males after some of the names, are lodgers, or employees, but I could be wrong. If anyone has any other thoughts on this or knows a name is wrong, please let me know – Shelley Green.
