O'NEILL // QUINN // HARDY

Barbara Rottman  Dec 1997  Charles Roe Gray O'Neill lived in the Shullsburg area and is listed on 1870 State of WI census, occupation tailor.  Son Simon Peter, age 15, listed as apprentice tailor.  son Hugh, age 13, is listed "at home"  Charles was married to Julia Quinn.  Their other children and their ages as of 1870 are: Eliza Jane (21), Sarah (22), James G. (19) and Charles P. (17).  Julia died in MA in 1859.  Sarah married Casper Hardy and had two children: Julia IB. born about 1869, and William C., born about 1871.  I believe Sarah died shortly after William's birth.

William was indentured to Jerry Sullivan of Aetna, WI by Caspar Hardy (his father).  Jerry Sullivan sent boy to live with Thomas Cummings, Box 145, Seymour, WI on condition that Cummings family would educate and care for the child (from letter dated May 22, 1884).  John Hardy, of Shullsburg, is uncle to William C. Hardy.  On May 18, 1905, William married Ida (MN unknown) in Hazel Green, WI.  They had two daughters, names unknown.  William Hardy worked for Cleveland Mining company in 1911.  He was last known to have moved to FL, where bought land and farmed south of Miami.  Am searching for information on William's mother and her O'Neill lineage.  William's sister, Julia, is last known to have lived in Web city, MO in 1904.  Believe Charles O'Neill died in the Shullsburg area, but have no mention of his death or date of death.  Am interested in any details on these surnames.  Thank You.

KEITHLEY // TURNER

Kay Bauman  Oct 1997   Enoch Keithley (b. abt 1832 in MO) married Amie Turner (b. abt 1836 in OH) in Wisconsin on Aug 29, 1852.  Amie lived with her parents in New Diggings in 1850 and by 1860 she and Enoch were in Shullsburg starting their family.  By 1870 Enoch drops off and Amie, her brother (George) and parents (Elisha and Sarah) are in Fiarview, IL.

My question is about Enoch, I believe he might have died in Wisconsin and would like to confirm that.  In addition, I have not been able to determine who his parents are.  Enoch is a fairly unique name in the Keithley line and I can find no match.  Any information about this would be very useful to me.  Did the marriage records in 1852 indicate parents?

DAGGETT // RIMA // LOOMIS

Kathleen Loomis Burnett  Sept 1997  On the 4th of November 1822, Orlean DAGGETT and Elizabeth RIMA were married in Waynesfield, Woods Co., OH.  This was the beginning of a 175 year old mystery.  Why did Orlean Daggett and Elizabeth Rima go to Woods Co., OH to marry when they lived in Geauga co., OH.?  soon after the marriage they moved to Stephenson Co., IL.  Life went on for Orlean and Elizabeth and they had one child, born very soon after their marriage a daughter Mary Ann who married Ephraim Harrison LOOMIS  in Stephenson Co., IL in 1836 and then the family again moved.  This time they moved to Lafayette County, WI.  They arrived in about 1840 and stayed until about 1857.  They then again moved their family to Kansas arriving in 1858.  Mary Ann's parents followed and they, Orlean DAGGETT, and Elizabeth RIMA died there, along with Ephraim Harrison LOOMIS.  All within 3 years of one another.  The second part of the mystery is that when Mary Ann died in October of 1888 she was not buried in Kansas, even though her children and grandchildren lived there, her husband and parents were buried there.  The mortician's record states that her body was shipped back to Ohio.  The mystery is; why was her body shipped to Ohio when they had lived in so many places and where in Ohio was it shipped to, and how would one go about finding her grave to prove it?

Any help or suggestion are more than welcome.  My family has spent years trying to figure this one out.

MOORE //NETHERY

Robert Erickson   May 1997   I'm  very interested in knowing what happened to James and Ellen (Ann?) Moore in Shullsburg, WI, the parents of John C. Moore, my  great-great-grandfather on my paternal grandmother's side. There was a  James and Elizabeth Moore of similar ages in the area at the same time.  Who knows if they're related. Could be. James and Ellen were there in  1860, but not 1870. However, they were old enough to have died during that time. He was born in 1783, Ireland, and her in 1793, Ireland.  They all came over via Scotland and England in 1843, before the potato famine of 1845. Wasn't that lucky? Or did they know something? Or were conditions still bad enough to just leave?

Brothers James and John Nethery resided there, but John was gone after the civil war. Don't know what happened to him. Can't find anything.  They could be brothers of my great-great-grandmother Matilda Nethery Moore. The brothers, Nethery's mother was Mary, but she was a widow the earliest times I see her in Shullsburg, and can't find out who her husband was. Could be a John or James considering the naming conventions of the time. Mary and son James is buried in Shullsburg.   Both John C. Moore and parents had many children born there. I'm still in need of any birth records that might be available. I don't know about the children of James. They could have stayed and married there. The only children of John C. Moore to have married there were Jane and Mary. Some of the children were gone after the civil war, don't know what happened to them.

John C. Moore and remaining family moved to Caribou, CO, between 1875 and 1880. Son James mysteriously showed up there in 1880 with a wife. Been having some luck getting info from there. Still plenty to know.  Any information would be appreciated and willing to share what I have.  Thank You!
