On the farm of Freddie PETERSEN (formerly GEIWITZ & GASSERT)
Cemetery Recorded by Mrs. Anita J. LEE
{This is} a union cemetery, which is divided by an imaginary line into two equal parts, one-half of which belongs to the Roman Catholics and the other half to the German Lutherans and German Methodists, who hold the north part, which is on the farm of Jacob SEMERLING and the other is one the farm of F. GASSERT. This arrangement was made about 1870. The first burial, however, was in 1859, a son of Fred GASSERT who was about twelve years of age. [From Neil's Houston Co. History, 1882, p. 394.]
At one time a fence actually separated the above two parts of the cemetery. On Nov. 10, 1874, Frederick GASSERT, Hobert GSTALDER, Frederick GASSERT, Jr., Andrew HARTMAN, Jacob DABALD, and William PRIEM bought some of the above land for one dollar. In the land deed of the PETERSEN farm, the German Ridge Cemetery is excepted out and set aside as a cemetery. This cemetery contains some of the first farmers in Minn. as the land office which opened at Brownsville, MN in 1854 issued government patents to several of the people buried here.
