In 1876, the school board began to cast about for a site for a new grade school. No exact date for
the occupancy of the building can be found. In June, 1903, a movement was started to erect a large
building on this site. The building was accepted in January, 1905. The school grounds have been
since enlarged by two additions.

As published in "The City of Kenosha and Kenosha County Wisconsin: A Record of Settlement,
Organization, Progress and Achievement" by Frank H. Lyman Vol. 1, The S. J. Clarke Publishing Co.,
Chicago, 1916. p. 198
In the spring of 1901, action was taken looking toward a new building in the Sixth Ward, to take
the place of the old "North Side School," which had been in use since 1884. In September of that
year the plans of Chandler & Park were accepted for an eight-room building. The contract for
building went to John Belting, for $15,800, notwithstanding the fact that a bid for $15,443 from
David Stewart of Janesville is recorded. Plans, specifications and details of the building, brought
the amount up to $19,950; heating, American Foundry & Furnace Company, $2,550; plumbing, Frank
Swift, $600; supervision of construction, $958. The completion of the auditorium, later decided
upon, cost $725. The automatic heat control for $400, the furniture and venetian blinds, $865,
brought the cost of this school to over $26,000.
Early in the operations, a special committee appointed to select a name for the new school building
suggested that it be called "The Weiskopf School," in honor of an old resident of the North Side,
Dr. A. Weiskopf. A graceful acknowledgement was received from the family, followed by the donation
of a bell for the school, and a flag, as further expression of appreciation.
The school was opened in the fall of 1902.

Bain School
As published in "The City of Kenosha and Kenosha County Wisconsin: A Record of Settlement,
Organization, Progress and Achievement" by Frank H. Lyman Vol. 1, The S. J. Clarke Publishing Co.,
Chicago, 1916. p. 198
At the board meeting in March, 1905, a movement was started for a new school in the Fifth Ward.
This action was supported in May following a petition from 73 taxpayers of that ward, asking for a
new school building in that locality.
There was considerable delay in getting the city council to act upon the question of admitting the
site into the city.
In December, 1905, a lot 264 by 285 ft. was purchased of the Bain estate for $1,500 but all
questions pertaining to the purchase were not satisfactorily settled for nearly a year.
Meanwhile, the purpose of the school board to have a building somewhere, is shown by the records;
for on October 24, 1905, the contract for heating and ventilating was let to The American Foundry &
Furnace Company, for $3,375. In November, 1905, the plans and specifications of T. Gaastra for a
ten-room school were adopted. In December, 1905, the contract for construction was let to Fred
Larsen, for $30,990; but delay of a year in the operations, obliged him to ask for an additional
$975, on account of the rise in cost of building materials.
In October, 1906, other contracts were let, the plumbing to C. H. Goodman for $2,222. Other
contracts, the electric bell system and furniture brought the cost of this twelve-room school to
about $40,000.
In December, 1906, the board voted to name the school "The Edward Bain School" in honor of the
early settler and distinguished wagon manufacturer, and owner of the land from whom the school site
was purchased. The building was opened September 9, 1907, and all rooms were immediately filled.
In February, 1913, it was recommended that an eight-room addition be built to the Bain School. The
council voted a bond issue of $40,000. First, the plans of Howard H. Hahn were adopted. Bids were
called for and contracts let as follows: Heating, American Foundry & Furnace Co., $3,445; mason,
Fred Larsen, $11,547; carpenter work, Louis Anderson, $10,433; plastering, J. P. Beecher,
$2,558.55; painting, Charles Hansen, $825; structural iron, F. Pietsch, $2,307; sheet metal work,
Western Hardware Company, $2,615; electric work, Schippers Elect. Cons. Company, $103; finished
hardware, J.J. English, $493; plumbing, Kaelber & Kraft, $1,197. Total, $35,524. Architect's and
inspector fees brought the cost of the addition to over $38,000. The addition was ready for use in
February, 1914.
The Bain School as it stands today is fully a $78,000 building.

As published in "The City of Kenosha and Kenosha County Wisconsin: A Record of Settlement,

Chicago, 1916. p. 199
Before the Bain School was completed, the people of the Third Ward began agitating the question of
a new school for that section. Action of the board in February, 1908, to postpone the construction
of the Third Ward building another year, was followed by a petition for a school from residents;
and the following fall the board decided to call for competitive plans. Eleven architects responded
and submitted plans for a fourteen-room building. Out of these eleven, five were selected,
including those of two Kenosha architects, and of three from outside. All these plans were
rejected, and others for a twelve-room building were called for. Only T. Gaastra, and Lindl & Hahn,
of Kenosha, responded the second time. January 19, 1909, the plans of T. Gaastra were accepted. In
1909, the council voted a bond issue of $50,000. The school was named the Columbus School, in
response to a petition.
March 9, 1909, the contract for the heating was awarded to the American Foundary & Furnace Company,
for $3,975. In May, the contract for construction was let to the J. P. Cullen Company of Janesville
for $43,185; in July, the plumbing to Kaelber & Kraft for $3,103. Total cost of these contracts,
$50,263.
The school was opened in the spring of 1910.

Frank School
As published in "The City of Kenosha and Kenosha County Wisconsin: A Record of Settlement,
Organization, Progress and Achievement" by Frank H. Lyman Vol. 1, The S. J. Clarke Publishing Co.,
Chicago, 1916. p. 195
The lot, 141 ft. by 165 ft. at the corner of Ridge and Park streets, was purchased in March, 1894, for $1,000, of
Frederick Petersdorf.
The plans for a four-room building were called for and those of J. E. Clancy of Green Bay adopted. The bid of John
Belting for $8,932 for construction of a four-room brick veneer building was accepted August 27, 1895. Meanwhile, the
board had decided to name the new school after Col. Michael Frank, the motion to that effect being made by Johnson
Jackson. Colonel Frank, in whose honor the school was named, is known as "The father of the common school system of
Wisconsin." He was one of the most distinguished of the early settlers of Kenosha.
The minutes of February 11, 1896, contain a detailed account of the total expense for building and furnishing the Frank
School, summarized in shape, -- a rare and acceptable "find" to the one engaged in this research. The amount was
$10,970.
That the needs of this district were not anticipated in this building is shown by the record made in November, 1896,
when a teacher in the Frank School petitioned the board for assistance, she having eighty children in her room. As
might be expected, then, at a meeting on May 11, 1897, a motion to put a two-room addition on the Frank School was
referred to the building and grounds committee. The plans and specifications of Chas. Dickhaut were adopted. The
contract for building this addition was awarded to Chas. Theleen, for $3,834. An additional furnace, blackboards,
plumbing and furniture added $900 to the cost, making for the two-room addition a total of $4,734 and brining the cost
of this six-room building to $15,704.
In the summer of 1902, new furnaces were installed at a cost of $2,400.
In July, 1910, the suggestion was made in school board meeting to enlarge the Frank School. An addition to the east of
the old building was planned, and this necessitated the purchase of an additional lot. This and the residence on it
cost $3,800. In November, 1910, the plans of Howard H. Hahn for an eight-room addition were adopted. The council voted
a bond issue for $25,000 and later another for $17,000. In July, 1911, the contract for construction of this addition
was awarded to Gottlieb Schaefer for $30,310.
It was afterward decided to build an auditorium which added $3,000 to the cost. The other contracts were as follows:
American Foundry & Furnace Company, heating, $3,385; C. H. Goodman, plumbing, $3,697.75; the Johnson Service Company,
automatic heat control, $945; Johnson Service Company, pneumatic clock and bell system, $575; extras to contractor,
$294, making a total cost for this addition, not including furniture, of $42,207. Thus the cost of the fourteen-room
Frank School, as it now stands -- the original four-room building, with the two-room addition, and the six-room
addition, has cost a total of over $60,300.
Since the new addition extended to the east boundary line, it was necessary to buy additional land to afford the
children playground space. Another lot and house to the east were bought at a cost of $4,000.
The Frank School grounds thus enlarged are 252 ft. by 155 ft.; the total cost, $8,800; cost per sq ft. 22c. Had the
needs of this district been more nearly anticipated in 1894, when the first purchase for school purposes was made,
several thousand dollars would have been saved.

In April, 1898, the board purchased of Sam Reynolds the lot at the corner of Dayton and Pleasant streets for $2,000,
size 222 ft by 124 ft.
It was decided to erect a six-room building. The plans of Van Ryn and DeGillike, architects, were finally adopted and
the contract awarded to John Belting, for $12,600. the plumbing contract to P.F. Kinney, Milwaukee, was for $985:
heating, American Foundry & Furnace Company, $1,995. Total cost with furniture, $16,800.
On July 27, 1898, the board voted to name this new school "the Deming School." Mr. Newman was appointed a committee to
prepare a program for its dedication, and on December 28th, the board authorized the committee to invite Arthur Wheeler
of Chicago to give the address. Mr. Wheeler was a grandson of Rev. Reuben Deming, the pioneer resident of Kenosha in
whose honor the school was named. The dedication took place early in the year 1899.
The demands of the district soon necessitated the use of the basement rooms of the building, and the crowded condition
of the building is shown by the fact that its enrollment reached 500 pupils in a few years.
November 10, 1903, a proposition to sell the board three lots adjoining te Deming School to the south for $1,600 was
received but not accepted. This would have extended the school property to Elizabeth Street.

In the spring of 1899, a movement began for a new building on the North Side. On May 23, 1899, it
was moved by Commissioner Holderness that a committee consisting of five commissioners from the
North Side be appointed to look over and obtain figures on different sites, and report at the next
meeting. Of the sites reported, the one at the corner of Caledonia and Bronson was bought of the
owner, Jos. A. Pitts, for $2,500, dimensions 250 ft. by 156 ft. Mr. Chas. Dickhaut was selected as
the architect, who presented plans for a four-room building. Contracts for carpenter work were
awarded to John Belting for $5,271; for mason work to Jorgenson & Larson, for $3,995; plumbing, to
Burr Bros., for $1,018; heating to American Foundry & Furnace Company, $1,050. Total, $11,334.
It was decided to call this the "Gillett School" in honor of Judge Gillett, who had for many years
served as president of the board, and who had died in June of that year. The dedication occurred
February 27, 1900, James Cavanagh delivering the address.
In November, 1911, the school board, in anticipation of a sure demand for increased school
facilities in that section of the city, purchased of Mr. Adam Weyer a vacant lot north of the
Gillett School, 297 by 297 ft., for the sum of $8,000.
A strip of land between the old lot and the new purchase, 47 ft. by 156 ft., was bought in
December, 1914, for $900. Upon this new new open air school was built. With these additions the
Gillett school property is one of the largest and finest in this city. Thus by the foresight of the
board of 1914-15, an adequate site, purchased at a reasonable price, is ready for the large
building which the growth of the city in that section will make necessary before many years.
