College of Commerce History

As published in "The City of Kenosha and Kenosha County Wisconsin: A Record of Settlement, Organization, Progress and Achievement" by Frank H. Lyman Vol. 1, The S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., Chicago, 1916. p. 356

The College of Commerce, an educational institution of which Kenosha has every reason to be proud, was organized in 1893 by Otis L. Trenary. The first year's sessions were held in Simmons Hall, with about fifty pupils in attendance. Later a removal was made to the first floor of the county courthouse, where the school was maintained for seven years. In 1901 Mr. Trenary erected the first building in Wisconsin for private commercial school purposes, this structure being located at Sheridan Road and Market Street in Kenosha, the building being now leased by the city and utilized as a public commercial high school. In 1907 Mr. Trenary built the second private commercial school building in Wisconsin at Racine and there he conducted his school for seven years. That building is now also used by the public schools as a commercial high school building. Mr. Trenary had about two hundred pupils in each of these institutions. He still owns the buildings which are rented by the two cities. His own college was removed to the Isermann Building and there he specializes in stenographic work.
