Dempster Darrow - He was born Nov 30 1837, Nowensfield, Jefferson, NY. He was killed by a train in Mauston at the Elm Street crossing, 1 Nov 1895 and he died 4 Nov 1895.  He was a son of Joseph Darrow and Pamela White, and at the time of his death he was living on his fathers farm in Summit.
His service record carried the following remarks:
"Mustered in June 3, 1864 at Camp Washburn. He was assigned to Company I, 39th Regt.
Roll quoted M.I.-M.O. left sick at soldiers rest Chicago Sept, 64- Orig. disch. Cert. oriented A.I.O. 1/29/85 shows that Dempster Darrow was discharged on the 28th day of Octobewr, 1864 at Chicago, Ill. By reason of surg. cert. of disability on acct. of debility resulting from typhoid fever and expiration of term of service. Born in Booneville, N. Y. Disch'd as corporale."

Within the 1885 Wisconsin Census Report for veterans he is listed as Squire Noble King, Co. I 6th Wisconsin Infantry; post office - Necedah. Within the 1895 Report he is listed as Squire W. King, Co. I, 6th Wisconsin Infantry; post office - Necedah. Within the 1905 Report he is listed as Squire N. King, Co. D, 6th Wisconsin Infantry; post office - Necedah. In the 1914 Index of Wisconsin Veterans he is listed as Squire Noble King, Co. D, 6th Wisconsin Infantry.

Henry A. Darrow, son of Alexander Darrow and Electa Wilcox, was born March 8, 1831, at Black Rock near Rochester, New York. He died January 11, 1904, at the home of his son-in-law, Daniel P. Card, near Colfax, Dunn Co., WI, and buried there in Hill Grove Cemetery.

Henry was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the 10th Independent Battalion, Wisconsin Light Artillery. He enlisted March 22, 1864, at New Lisbon, Juneau County, Wisconsin, to serve three years as a Private. On April 6, 1864 he was mustered into Federal service with the Battery at Madison, Wisconsin. At that time he received $60.00 of his $300.00 enlistment bounty, and was listed in the battery records as a 33 year old, 5'7½" tall teamster, with light hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion, born in Black Rock, New York. His enlistment was credited to the town of Necedah, Juneau County, Wisconsin. On April 27, 1864, Henry joined the battery in the field.

On March 10, 1865, Henry was captured with about 600 others when the Confederates charged their camp at Monroe Cross Roads near Fayettesville, North Carolina. He was initially confined at Raleigh, North Carolina, and from there marched to Richmond, Virginia, where he was confined at Libby Prison. On March 30, 1865 he was paroled at Coxe's Wharf, Virginia, having been a prisoner exactly twenty days. On March 31st he reported to Camp Parole, Maryland, and on April 2, 1865, sent to Benton Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri, where he reported April 7th. On April 10, 1865, was given a 30 day furlough and returned to his home in Juneau County, Wisconsin. He returned and was mustered out of Federal service on June 23, to date from June 7, 1865, at Madison, Wisconsin. On the Detachment Muster-out Roll it was noted that he had received $100.00 of his Federal enlistment bounty and was due the remaining $200.00, three months extra pay as a prisoner, less $10.15 cents transportation advanced while on furlough. He received a pension of $4.00 per month from June 8, 1865.


Lorenzo Dow Pratt - Shot in the knees at Gettysburg. Mentioned several times in the book An Irishman in the Iron Brigade. Buried in Mauston. His brother (my g-g-grandfather) was John Wesley Pratt, a vet of the 10th Wisconsin Light Artillery (later transferred to the 12th); cited for efficiency during the War.  Daniel Roy Pratt

Duncan McKercher - Captain of C "H" from enrollment. Promoted Major on July 24, 1863. Taken prisoner Sept. 20, 1863 and remaining in hands of the enemy at date of Muster out of the Reg. Nov. 3, 1864.

Oliver B. Chester - Prisoner since Sep. 20, 1863.  Engaged in battles of Perryville Oct 8, 1862, Stone River Dec 31, 1862, Chicamangua Sep 20, 1863

Thomas Sanford - Wounded at Chickamangau Sep. 19, 1863.  Engaged in battles of Perryville, Stone River and Chickamangau.

Daniel Conway - Captured at the battle of Belmont, MO on Nov. 1861 - paroled and joined the Co. E 7th Missouri - captured at Holly Springs, MS on Dec 1862

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of Application for Pension No. 86352 and to return it herewith, with such information as is furnished by the files of this office.

It appears from the Rolls on File in the Office that FRANCIS C. WEBSTER was enrolled on the 26th day of (month I can not read) 1862 at Kildare in Co. G 18th Regiment of Wisconsin volunteers, to serve 3 years or during the war and mustered into service as a Corpl on the 25th day of January 1862 at Milwaukee in Co G 18th Regiment of Wisconsin, Volunteers to serve 3 years or during the war. On the Return Mustered Roll of Co of the Regiment for the Months of December 1864 he is reported "Died in Hospital Chattanooga, November 12, 1862" cause of death not stated.

I also have copies of the Widow's Claim for Increase of Pension Act July 25, 1866. His widow was Charlotte A. Webster. Lists the Certificate No. as 65733


Charles Hanson, Pvt., 21 years of age. He was single, born in Michigan and a miller. He was enlisted into service May 27th,'61 at Madison by Capt. Stevens. He had hazel eyes, brown hair, a light complexion ans stood 5'6" tall. He was mustered into service Jule 11,'61 at Madison by Capt. McIntyre. He resided at Lemonweir in Juneau Co. and was credited to the 8th Ward of Milwaukee. He was detatched to Battery B, 4th U.S. Artillery June 7, '62 to March 11,'64. He reenlisted March 11,'64. He was transferred to Independent Battalion, Co. A, June 10,'64.

Charles Augustus Crawford died 25 May 1903 in LaGrange. He and his father Robert (above) are buried in the Wood Cemetery, Byron WI. Charles is mentioned in the Irishman's diary, and has several mentions in the book "In The Bloody Cut at Gettysburg". He was wounded at South Mountain, thus missing Antietem. He was wounded again at Gettysburg. He went AWOL to marry Volney DeJean's sister Helen Madora, returned to service after six weeks, was promoted Sergeant, and was discharged at the end of the war. William W. Garland was wounded and taken prisoner in 1862, he was returned, was wounded at Gettysburg, spent some time in Andersonville and re-enlisted in 1865. When he was mustered out he held the rank of corporal.  Thanks to Beth Herman-Ukasick

When he mustered into the 15th on December 8, 1861, at Camp Randall in Madison, he listed his residence as New Lisbon, Juneau County, Wis.
