Henry was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the 10th Independent Battalion, Wisconsin Light Artillery. He enlisted March 22, 1864, at New Lisbon, Juneau County, Wisconsin, to serve three years as a Private. On April 6, 1864 he was mustered into Federal service with the Battery at Madison, Wisconsin. At that time he received $60.00 of his $300.00 enlistment bounty, and was listed in the battery records as a 33 year old, 5'7½" tall teamster, with light hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion, born in Black Rock, New York. His enlistment was credited to the town of Necedah, Juneau County, Wisconsin. On April 27, 1864, Henry joined the battery in the field.
On March 10, 1865, Henry was captured with about 600 others when the Confederates
charged their camp at Monroe Cross Roads near Fayettesville, North Carolina.
He was initially confined at Raleigh, North Carolina, and from there marched
to Richmond, Virginia, where he was confined at Libby Prison. On March 30,
1865 he was paroled at Coxe's Wharf, Virginia, having been a prisoner exactly
twenty days. On March 31st he reported to Camp Parole, Maryland, and on April
2, 1865, sent to Benton Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri, where he reported
April 7th. On April 10, 1865, was given a 30 day furlough and returned to
his home in Juneau County, Wisconsin. He returned and was mustered out of
Federal service on June 23, to date from June 7, 1865, at Madison, Wisconsin.
On the Detachment Muster-out Roll it was noted that he had received $100.00
of his Federal enlistment bounty and was due the remaining $200.00, three
months extra pay as a prisoner, less $10.15 cents transportation advanced
while on furlough. He received a pension of $4.00 per month from June 8,
1865.
