PLATTEVILLE

G. C. HENDY, merchant, Platteville; is a native of Dodgeville, Wis., born in 1847. His father, Samuel Hendy, was born in Cornwall, England, Parish of Breage, in February, 1820, son of James and Priscilla (Thomas) Hendy. His mother, whose maiden name was Ann Shephard, was born in March, 1820, also in Cornwall, England, Parish of Mullion, daughter of Thomas and Ann (Mitchell) Shephard. Mr. Hendy, Sr., came to America in June, 1842, and resided in Dodgeville, Wis., from that time till 1866, since which time he has resided in Platteville; soon after coming to Platteville, he bought out the bookstore of McCurn & Griswold, which he carried on till 1874 in company with his son. G. C. Hendy then sold out to his partner and retired from business; since which time the present proprietor has carried on the business alone. G. C. Hendy was married in 1877, to Miss Julia, daughter of John Kemler, Esq., one of the pioneers of Platteville, and has two children - John Kemler and Clarence Augustus.
