Section 5 of Rienzi Cemetery has a large veterans monument at the head of the section.
This is what greets you at the end of the long entrance to the burial grounds.
Adjoining the monument is a section of the cemetery that was set aside for burial of those
veterans who were unable to purchase their own gravesite.
Local historian Tom Kuchenberg, has researched Memorial Day traditions in Fond du Lac, as well as
the growth of the "Grand Army of the Republic" veterans organization. He delved into the history
of those veterans who were buried in this veterans section. As a result of his work, Tom was able to
request that The Veterans Administration provide headstones for every civil war veteran buried
in this section in an unmarked grave. 20 headstones created in the 19th century style, were shipped to Rienzi cemetery.
The cemetery also re-set the existing tombstones for those veterans in this area that
already had tombstones. New inscription information from previously unmarked graves
appears in red
