SILENT TESTIMONY OF FURY OF FLAMES
Half Tone Photographs of Burned Structures
ANGRY FLAMES’ AWFUL WORK
Garage is Shown as a Heap of Debris – Gaunt Skeletons of Ruined Churches

The Commonwealth today prints five clear-cut halftone photographs of the various structures which were destroyed or partially destroyed in the fearful conflagration that swept over a section of the east side Friday night and Saturday morning. The photograph of the garage shows in a graphic manner the awful work of the flames, only a mass of twisted steel and iron automobile parts and 3 blackened and charred section of the flooring covered with debris being discernable. In the background may be seen the ruins of the Mayham residence. This photograph was taken from a point directly west of the garage on Marr street.

Another halftone shows the awful ruins of St. Joseph’s church. The fury of the flames can be estimated by a glance at this picture. In the foreground is shown a corner of the garage ruins, while in the background is the skeleton of what was once one of the city’s beautiful places of worship.

This picture was taken from a point on Marr street opposite Grant school, the camera being pointed to the northeast.

A third halftone shows the ruins of the Congregational church. This is taken from a point on Marr street west of the south end of the Presbyterian church. A fourth picture, taken from in front of the Jolin Heath residence on East First street shows the result of the fire on St. Peter’s Lutheran church. The fifth picture shows the ruins of Grant school building taken from a point near the Lutheran school building. The nearness and almost miraculous escape of the Salem church can be appreciated when this picture is studied.
