QUINNESEC — Susan L. Ottinger, 61, of 702 Cliff St. in Quinnesec, died Sunday, April 28, 2008, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 13, 1946, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Lawrence and Patricia (McLaughlin) Youren. Susan was a 1965 graduate of Kingsford High School and has been a lifelong resident of this area.

She served in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) with the United States Army as a legal secretary. Susan worked in the housekeeping department at the Iron Mountain VA Medical Center. She retired in 2004 after working for 22 years at the V.A. Susan volunteered at the Iron Mountain VA Medical Center and enjoyed gardening and crocheting.

She is survived by her sons, Jay Ottinger of Fort Hood, Texas and Larry “Gismo” (Roxanne) Ottinger of Florence, Wis.; two grandchildren, Shane and Corrine Ottinger; three sisters, Diane (David) Gardipee of Aurora, Wis., Pamela (Michael) Steinbrecher of Felch and Roxanne (Roger) Cazzola of Loretto; longtime traveling partner, Larry DeCamp of Quinnesec; her stepfather, Delano Solberg of Felch; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Rev. Robert Mueller will officiate.

Burial will be in Felch Cemetery

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dickinson County Cancer Unit in her memory.

Donald Kensik

FLORENCE, Wis. — Donald William Kensik, 64, of Florence, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2008, at his home.

He was born June 17, 1943, in Chicago, son of the late Chester and Lillian (Virva) Kensik.

On Dec. 29, 1969, he married Barbara Wolfer in Wheaton, Ill., and she survives.

Donald was a mail carrier in Illinois and after coming to Florence in 1978, worked for Allen Dock and retired from Johnson Creek Lumber in Tipler, Wis. He was a Vietnam era veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the American Legion Post 211.

Don was a movie buff, enjoyed time with his family especially his grandchildren, was a smart dresser and had a penchant for clothes shopping which he enjoyed doing for himself and others.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Kensik; son-in-law, Andrew (Rebecca) Kelley; four grandchildren, Amber, Andrew, Marshall, and William Kelley, all of Florence; and two sisters, Diane Kensik of Naperville, Ill., and Marge (Dom) Minervini of Westmont, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Anna Kelley in 2002, and three brothers, Robert, LeRoy and Chester Kensik.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home in Florence.

The funeral Mass will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Michael Betley will officiate.

Inurnment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery in Commonwealth, Wis.

Cemone Anderson

CRYSTAL FALLS — Cemone M. Anderson, 57, of Crystal Falls, passed away peacefully Friday, April 18, 2008, at her home surrounded by family.

She was born Sept. 19, 1950, in Iron Mountain, daughter of Claire (McCraw) Johnson Wood and the late Chester Johnson. Cemone was raised in Iron Mountain and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1968.

She married David Anderson in 1995. After being married, they resided in Crystal Falls. Cemone worked for the Dickinson-Iron Health Department for 17 years as a nurse.

She was a member of United Lutheran Church and life member and past president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2891 Auxiliary of Crystal Falls. Cemone especially loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and many friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her loving husband, David Anderson; her dear loving mother, Claire Johnson Wood of Crystal Falls; five children, Mark (Pam) Manincor of Iron Mountain, Lisa Schabel of Florence, Wis., David (Nikki) Anderson of Flint, Mich., Rayleen (Brian) Semke of Crystal Falls and Nathan Manincor. Nanny of 12 special angels, Jamie, Courtney, Chanel, Hailey, Liberty, Noah, Kayla, Cemone, Paris, Nathan, Jeffery, Kolby; and one brother, Chester Johnson of Madison, Wis.,

Besides her father, Cemone was preceded in death by one sister, Claudette and one grandson, Andrew.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at United Lutheran Church of Crystal Falls.

The VFW Auxiliary will offer a tribute service Tuesday at 10:45 a.m., at the church.

Memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the church. Pastor Michael Laakko will officiate.

Audrey Carlson
April 18, 2008

AURORA, Wis. — Audrey Darlene Carlson, 73, of Aurora, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 16, 2008.

Audrey was born Nov. 28, 1934, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Robert and Violet (Wahlstrom) Krans. She graduated from the Kingsford High School in 1952 and was a long time resident of Aurora. Audrey worked at the Wisconsin-Michigan Power Co. until her marriage to John Arvid Carlson on Jan. 28, 1956. In addition to the family farm, Audrey worked as a school cook at Hillcrest grade school in Aurora for many years.

Audrey and John Arvid were blessed with 52 years of marriage. She was a member of the First Covenant Church in Iron Mountain. Audrey loved spending time with family and serving in the Gideon Auxiliary and Ladies Aid. She also enjoyed many hours of gardening.

Audrey is survived by her husband, John Arvid; children, Robert and Kathryn Carlson of Marshfield, Wis., Daniel and Judith Carlson of Bloomfield, N. Y., David and Mary Carlson of Florence, Wis. and Venisa Zoppetti-Leslie of Aurora. Audrey’s grandchildren are Kristina, Kara, Gabriel, Zachary, Daniel and Grace (Robert and Kathryn), Erik, Paul and Steven (Daniel and Judith), Rachel, Ethan, Jonah and Hannah (David and Mary) and Linnea, John Thomas, Joshua and Chelsie (Venisa); great-grandchildren are Preston, Jacob and Gavin (Linnea and Jason Ingalls).

Surviving sisters of Audrey are Marilyn (Jack) Watson, Loraine Larson, Gayle Trible and Karen Andrusco.

Visitation will be held at the Aurora Free Church on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Funeral services will be on Monday at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Peter Erickson and Rev. Karl Utzat will officiate.

Burial at Homestead-Aurora Cemetery will be held immediately after the service with lunch served thereafter.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Gideon Bible Fund. Gideon memorial envelopes will be available at the service or may be mailed to: Gideons International P.O. Box 332, Quinnesec, MI 49876.

Norma Merhalski
April 15, 2008

FLORENCE, Wis. — Norma Viola Merhalski, 95, lifelong resident of Florence, passed into Eternal Life on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Golden Living Center in Florence.

She was born Nov. 5, 1912, in Florence, daughter of the late Harry and Ida (Forseth) Cretors. Norma was a 1930 graduate of Florence High School. She won many perfect attendance honors, and throughout high school, she was active in chorus and drama.

Norma married Frank Merhalski on April 24, 1934, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Florence. Together they raised four children. Frank preceded her in death in 1992.

In her earlier years, she was employed as a factory worker in Florence. Later, Norma assisted Helen LaFave in catering numerous weddings and social functions. Norma was a housekeeper and a cook at St. Mary Catholic Church. In her spare time, she wallpapered for many of her friends.

Norma was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a member of the Altar Society.

She loved gardening, picking berries, canning, and baking, especially pork pies and pasties. For many years, Norma had a Monday morning routine in Florence; as an act of kindness, she would hand out packages of Little Debbie snack cakes to some of the area businesses so the employees would have dessert during their coffee breaks. In 1980, she was honored in the Florence Centennial parade for being a good citizen.

Norma enjoyed going for rides, dining out, stopping for ice cream, and playing cards, especially Solitaire, Royal Rummy, Cribbage, and Thirty-one. She would often meet with her friends at Barb’s Cafe to drink coffee, have some toast, and socialize.

Each day she looked forward to reading The Daily News and each Wednesday, The Florence Mining News. Norma enjoyed walking, and at the age of 90, continued to walk 1-2 miles around Florence every day. Many people in town came to recognize her by her beautiful white hair. At age 92, Norma became a resident of Golden Living Center in Florence, and remained agile by spending much of her time walking in the corridors.

Survivors include her three children, Robert (Gloria) Merhalski of Florence, Carol Olin of Ironton/Crosby, Minn., John Merhalski of Florence; eight grandchildren, JoAnn (Dennis) Schneider of Algoma, Wis., Robert (Randi) Kusmitch of Aurora, Wis., Joanie (John) Richtig of Iron Mountain, Darren (Natalie) Merhalski of Green Bay, Wis., Lynn (Marc) Beauregard of Gregory, Mich., Lori (Brad) Balza of South St. Paul, Minn., Tanya Olin of Annaville, Minn., Julie Ann (Daniel) Eberhardt of Brainard, Minn.; 19 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husband, Frank Merhalski, Norma was preceded in death by her daughter, Laraine Kusmitch and her son-in-law, Butch Olin.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home of Florence.

Prayers will be offered on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church of Florence. Fr. Raymond Valerio will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Commonwealth, Wis., in the spring.

Pallbearers will be Robert Kusmitch, Lonney Goman, Darren Merhalski, Kyle Kirby, Butch Kusmitch, and Brett Schneider.

Gertrude Lutz

IRON MOUNTAIN — Gertrude Lutz (nee MacDonald), 90, of Iron Mountain, passed away Friday, April 11, 2008, at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers.

She was born Dec.17, 1917, in White Pine, daughter of the late Archie and Lorretta (Diedrick) MacDonald.

Gertrude graduated from Ontonagon High School, class of 1933, at age 15. Upon completion of high school, she went on to obtain her teaching certificate from Ontonagon County Normal. She then went to Detroit, where she graduated from Detroit Business College with a degree in accounting. Returning to Ontonagon, she worked at the hospital for two years before traveling to Minnesota and graduating with a degree in medical and X-ray technology from Northwest Institute of Medical Technology. She moved to Two Rivers, Wis., where she began work at the Two Rivers Hospital.

On May 20, 1943, she married William J. Lutz and resided in Manitowoc, Wis. for 36 years. He preceded her in death in 1977.

She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church Parish, National Circle Daughters of Isabella, Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Lady Elks Club. She was a den mother and Girl Scout leader for many years. Later she went on to become a bookkeeper at Stangel’s Super Value for 15 years and became a member of the Retail Clerks Association.

In 1984, she moved to Iron Mountain to be near her son and daughter and their families. Gertrude became part of the office staff at The Advertiser where she worked for many years. She was a member of The Royal Neighbors Club, the Iron Mountain Senior Center, and St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish. Her hobbies included fishing, knitting and reading.

Survivors include, one son, John (Marilyn) Lutz of Spread Eagle, Wis.; one daughter, Linda (Curtis) Johnson-Gay of Florence, Wis.; grandchildren, Steven Johnson, David Johnson, Michael (Nicole) Lutz, Lisa (Mark) Hirth and Matthew (fiance, Stacy Olson) Lutz; four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Ansley, Finnley and Cayden; one sister-in-law, Elaine (Timm) Morrell; and a nephew, Robert Timm Jr.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one brother, Jack MacDonald.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church of Iron Mountain.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the church. Rev. Fr. Daniel S. Zaloga will officiate.

FLORENCE, Wis. — Ruth M. Teichert, 62, of Florence, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at her home, after a short battle with cancer.

She was born June 29, 1945, in Fern, Wis., daughter of the late Orris and Eleanor (Thomas) McLain. She was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from Florence High School in 1963.

Ruth married Heinz Teichert in 1963.

Ruth was employed at the Goodman Lumber Mill, Haberkorn’s Super Market as a baker, and Pride Manufacturing. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. Ruth enjoyed sewing, gardening, upholstery, woodworking, and bird watching.

She is survived by two daughters, Lisa (Troy) Sutherland of Florence and Nicole (Jim) Jones of Kingsford; one son, John (Lisa) Teichert of Crystal Falls; seven grandchildren, Paige, Tyler, Zackary, Jordan, Sydney, Dylan and Alex; one brother, Gordon McLain of Fence, Wis.; two sisters, Linda Wolosyn of Union Grove, Wis. and Lila Tibbs of Fence; many nieces and nephews; special friend, Joyce Wolosyn; and her loving cat, Coco.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Florence.

The funeral service will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at the church. Pastor Doug Johnson will officiate.

Burial will be in Fence Cemetery in the spring.

Lula Powell

QUINNESEC — Lula E. Powell, 87, of Quinnesec, died Thursday, April 3, 2008, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.

She was born on Aug. 20, 1920, in Tipler, Wis., daughter of the late Fred and Kate (Plumley) Schuls.

She married Clayton Powell in Alvin, Wis. in 1937, and he preceded her in death in November 1988.

Lula worked many places and had many titles in her life. She worked at Michigan Manufacturing and Hancock Wood Products. She even worked as a welder in Sturgeon Bay during World War II, working on ships.

Lula was a lifelong resident of the area. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and canning. Another of her talents was wallpapering and interior design. She loved to help family members decorate their homes. She really enjoyed spending time with grandchildren, and the highlight of her summer was the family picnics.

Lula is survived by three daughters, Ida (Doran) Osborne of Alvin, Cindy (Fred) Powell of Kingsford, and Donna Wallner of Spring Hill, Fla.; six sons, Bernard (Judi) Powell of Niagara, Wis., David (Beverly) Powell of Kingsford, Gary (Darcie) Powell of Dunbar, Wis., Dennis (Patricia) Powell of Kingsford, Richard (Peggy) Powell of Kingsford, and Douglas (Susie) Powell of Kingsford; a sister in-law, Theresa Schuls of Florence, Wis.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Joseph Powell; sisters, Lydia Augustine and Lucy Kreuger; and brothers, Henry, Ervin, Allie, and Herman Schuls.

Visitation was held Sunday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

The funeral service followed at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford. Rev. Chad Ott officiated.

Burial will be in the Quinnesec Cemetery.

Grandsons Michael Powell, David, Kevin, and Kurt Massicotte, Cray, Brian and Dale Powell, and Tom, Ian and Nate Powell, and Justin Wallner will serve as pallbearers.

FLORENCE, Wis. — Helen Lemanski, 89, of Florence, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Golden Living Center in Florence.

She was born June 24, 1918, in Chicago, daughter of the late Francis and Eva Koranga. Helen was raised in Chicago and graduated from Kelly High School in Chicago.

She married Henry Lemanski on Sept. 20, 1941, in Chicago. They lived in Chicago until 1991, when they moved to Commonwealth, Wis.

Helen was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Young at Hearts. She enjoyed reading and especially visiting with family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Henry; one son, Alan (Mary) Lemanski of Oconto Falls, Wis.; one daughter, Joan (Bill Eidenberger) Nowak of Florence; six grandchildren, Robert, Michael, Melissa, Diane, Shevonne and Michelle; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Helen was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Frank, and one sister, Estelle.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home in Florence.

FLORENCE, Wis. — Jimmie Wickstrom, 54, of Florence, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2008, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

He was born Nov. 13, 1953, in Crystal Falls, son of Harold Soderberg and Mary Louise Youngell Wickstrom. He graduated from Florence High School, and went on to attend the following schools: Gogebic Community College (associates in business), Oakland Community College (environmental health certification), Asbury College (B.A. degree in sociology), Asbury Theological Seminary, U.S. Naval Corps School, and U.S. Naval Operating Room Technician School.

Jimmie married the former Penny Kinney on Dec. 9, 1972. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years as a corpsman and operating room technician. He served in Key West, Fla., Jacksonville, Fla., Great Lakes, Ill., Oakland, Calif., and finally on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt Air Craft Carrier in the Mediterranean.

He went on to work as a pastor at the United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, Ohio, an operating room technician at the Iron County Community Hospital in Iron River, an operating room ancillary staff manager at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Ky., a central service manager at Ephraim McDowell Medical Center in Danville, Ky. and an operating room technician and medical instrument technician at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain. Jimmie also enjoyed the home church ministry for eight years.

He is survived by his wife, Penny of Florence; three sons, Jamie (Amber) and Paul (friend, Stephanie Cerquera), both of Manassas, Va. and Bret (Liebe) of Dallas; his mother, Mary Louise Youngell Wickstrom of Florence; three grandchildren, Kylie, Mason, and Vanessa; aunts, uncle, and cousins; three sisters-in-law, Darsie (Chris) Meloche of Owosso, Mich., Karen McMullen of London, Ky. and Pam (Rayne) Smith of Pulaski, Wis.; three brothers-in-law, Duane (Maychen) Kinney of Allyn, Wash., Warren (Patty) Egan of Cavour, Wis. and Tim (Candy) Egan of Montana; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives, and very dear friends.

Jimmie was preceded in death by his, father, Harold and his stepfather, Wesley Wickstrom.

He was a wonderful son, husband, father and grandfather. Family has always been important to him. He loved fishing and hunting, much of which his wife, Penny did with him, and he participated in the Buck Masters Classic Life Hunt in Alabama in January 2007 where he got an eight-point and a nine-point buck.

He loved to travel, most recently going from Florence to Manassas, then to Alabama for the Classic Life Hunt. After that he traveled to Dallas, where he stayed a month, then to Branson, Mo. and on to Florence.

In December 2007, he stayed in Waikiki Beach, Hawaii for a week and then went on a cruise to many Hawaiian Islands. Throughout his life and his battle with brain cancer, he was an inspiration to many. He loved the Lord and sharing His word with others so that they will be able to live in eternity in Heaven.

Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Iron River.

The memorial service will be 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the church. Rev. Mark Ryan will officiate.

FLORENCE, Wis. — Ella Bartsch, 82, of Florence, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2008, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.

She was born May 6, 1925, in Stambaugh, daughter of the late Theodore and Dora (Borns) Olson. Ella attended school in Stambaugh.

Ella loved to sing, play cards, and socialize. She served as president of the “Young at Heart” for 19 years, as secretary for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary for 18 years, and as chairperson for the Town of Commonwealth. She was a bartender for the Our Bar and for (Honey’s) J &J Bar. Ella was quite a lady and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by four daughters, Phyllis (Allen) Novak, Linda McCoy, Sandy McCoy, Shirley (Scott) Waite, all of Florence; two sons, Dan (Debbie) McCoy and Rick (Renee) McCoy, both of Florence; one sister, Effie Olson of Appleton, Wis.; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; her lifelong, dear friend, Doris; and two brothers-in-law, Wade Comish and Fred Hill, both of Iron River.

Besides her parents, Ella was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Bartsch; two daughters, Rosalie and Nora; three sisters, Erma Hill, Eleanore Meyers and Elaine Comish; two brothers, Everette Olson and Elroy Olson; two granddaughters, Lashawnda McCoy and Amanda McCoy; and a grandson, Dustin McCoy.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at the First Presbyterian Church of Florence. Rev. Doug Johnson will officiate.

Burial will be in Commonwealth Cemetery in Commonwealth, Wis.

FLORENCE, Wis. — Darcia R. Johnson, 62, of Florence, passed away Monday, March 17, 2008, at Dickinson County Hospital in Iron Mountain, after a valiant battle with cancer.

She was born May 11, 1945, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Henry (Cotton) and June (Fisher) VanHaute.

On Jan. 28, 1967, in Palmer, Alaska, she married Philip Johnson.

Darcia was a graduate of Kingsford High School in Kingsford, class of 1963. She was instrumental in the formation of the Florence County Library, worked for the library and as a secretary for the Florence Mining News. She enjoyed gardening in her greenhouse, bird and wildlife watching, and especially spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Philip Johnson of Florence; one daughter, Sue Ann (Joe) Valdrow of North Pole, Alaska; two sons, John (Shelly) Johnson of Florence, Jess (Beth) Johnson of New Windsor, N.Y.; step-mother, Dorothy VanHaute of Kingsford; six grandchildren, Jamie, Bailey, Olivia, Matthew, Wade, Blake; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one infant son, Kenneth Paul, and two brothers, Terry Dean VanHaute and his twin, Kerry Don VanHaute.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Florence. Rev. Michael Betley and Sr. Marla Clercx will officiate.

The family will receive friends at a luncheon following services at the church.

Inurnment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Commonwealth.

FENCE, Wis. — Martha Lou Smith, 73, of Fence, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, in Armstrong Creek, Wis.

She was born Dec. 6, 1934, in Fence, daughter of the late Edward and Katherine (Moller) Thomas.

In 1951, she married William Nichols. He preceded her in death in 1966.

On Oct. 28, 1978, in Kingsford, she married Kenneth Smith, and he survives.

Martha attended school in Fence and lived most of her life there except for some time in Cudahy, Wis. In Cudahy, she worked for the public schools. Martha was a waitress at the former Kusmitch Restaurant in Florence, Wis., and did housekeeping in area homes and also cared for young children in her home. She was a volunteer and served meals to seniors at the Fence Town Hall. Being an avid cook, anyone visiting or near Martha was fed. She enjoyed her garden of vegetables and flowers, sewing, crocheting, berry picking, fishing, rebating, playing cards and the domino game “chicken feet”.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Smith of Fence; one daughter, Virginia (Gene) Keen of Wausau, Wis.; six sons, Donald (Bonnie) Nichols of Merrill, Wis., Wayne (Dorothy) Nichols of Florence, Edward (Rose) Nichols of Peshtigo, Wis., Phillip Nichols of Fence, Glen Nichols of Spread Eagle, Wis. and Michael (Carol) Nichols of Cudahy; two step-children, David (Candice) Smith of Aurora, Colo. and Virginia Smith of Milwaukee; three sisters, Laverne Moddie of Armstrong Creek, Wis., Doris Schuirmann of Iron Mountain and Betty (Ben) Janczewski of Armstrong Creek; two brothers, Patrick (Joanne) Thomas of Armstrong Creek and Walter (Doris) Thomas of Norway. She is further survived by 21 grandchildren, Jesse, Joshua, Jill, Sherry, James, Gregory, Hope, David, Johnathan, Adam, Teresa, William, Steven, Katie, Tammi, Jeff, Luke, Becky, Beth, Jenny, Craig; 11 great-grandchildren, Briar, Hannah, Sidney, Jaron, Dani, Aaliyah, Trey, Dominic, Kylynn, Leah and Branden; three step-grandchildren, Daniel, Michael and Roseann and one great step-grandchild, Zoey.

Besides her parents and husband, William Nichols, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Marion Meress, Lorraine Neuens and Ruth Olive; one brother, William Thomas; one grandchild, Christopher Michael; and one great-grandchild, Analiyah.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home in Florence and again on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Fence Bible Church in Fence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. The Rev. Timothy Smith will officiate.

Burial will be in the spring at Hillside Cemetery in Fence.

BATES TOWNSHIP — Robert Earl Nelson, 75, of Bates Township, died Saturday, March 8, 2008, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls.

He was born on Nov. 24, 1932, in Iron River, the son of the late Nels and Signe (Bjorkman) Nelson. He was the great-grandson of early Bates Township settlers, and he attended Rogers School.

On June 6, 1953, he married the former Nancy Jo Stark of Watersmeet. The couple made their home in Bates and they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2003.

He was drafted in 1953, serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War attaining the rank of corporal. He served as combat construction specialist in the 78th Engineering Battalion and was honorably discharged on June 22, 1955. He received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He worked for Layne Northwest, Vacationland Dairy, and Michigan Milk Producers for many years. He then worked in partnership with his sons in the logging business, retiring in 1994. Robert owned and operated a beef farm in Bates Township.

He was elected as Bates Township supervisor in 1984 and served 22 years. He helped establish the West Iron County Fire Department in 1987, and served in the capacity of chairman for many years. He was also instrumental in the water, sewer and cemetery projects in Bates. He was a member of the American Legion Alfred Branchini Post 17 in Iron River, the Teamsters, the Iron County Timberman’s Association and served on the Iron County Fair Board. He was named Iron County Agricultural Businessman of the Year in 1987.

Robert was an avid deer hunter and trout fisherman. He loved gardening, specifically cultivating prized tomatoes and pumpkins. He loved spending time outdoors on the family farm and in his woodworking shop.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; sisters, Evelyn Javoroski of Iron River and Virginia Nelson of Florence, Wis.; four daughters, Diana (Steve) Buzzell of Fenton, Mich., Sherry (Rick) Slade of Brighton, Mich., Susan (Bruce) Hasenbank of Free Soil, Mich. and Nancy (Bill) Johnson of Iron River; four sons, Robert (Diana) Nelson of Rushford, Minn., Larry (Theresa) Nelson of Iron River, Steven (Caton) Nelson of Allegan, Mich. and Michael (Tracy) Nelson of Iron River; 29 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren

and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Harvey Nelson; and his sister, Alice Volk.

Visitation will be held today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River.

A liturgical prayer service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River. The Rev. Norman Clisch, pastor, to offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Robert’s grandchildren will form an honor guard at the funeral service.

Interment will be in Bates Township Cemetery in Iron River.

CRYSTAL FALLS — Albert “Mink” Sartori, 85, of Crystal Falls, died Monday, March 3, 2008, at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, Wis.

He was born May 3, 1922, in Crystal Falls, the son of the late Antone and Angeline (Simeoni) Sartori. He graduated from the Crystal Falls High School in 1942, where he had been the starting center of the late Eddie Chamber’s U.P. Championship basketball team winning 39 consecutive victories over four years. He also played end for the Crystal Falls High School football team when it was re-instituted by coaches Bill Waytulonis and Paul Challancin following the Depression. He served in the U. S. Coast Guard during World War II and following his honorable discharge returned to Crystal Falls.

On May 9, 1945, he married the former Olga Girolimon and together the couple owned and operated the Ben Franklin Store in Crystal Falls from 1945 to 1984. They also owned stores in Iron River and Bessemer.

Mink continued his enjoyment of sports playing center field for the Northern Michigan and Wisconsin Hardball League and being a member of the Crystal Falls Men’s Golf Club where he was a past club champion.

He was also a member of Guardian Angels Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Louis Bowman Post of the American Legion, the Paisano Club and former member of the Crystal Falls Fire Department. He and his wife spent 23 years wintering in Vero Beach, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Olga; one son, Roger (Joanne) Sartori of Manistique; five daughters, Anita (Jim) Hayes of Green Bay, Mary Joy (Craig) Hubbs of Muskego, Wis.; Marjean (Bob) Davis of Cedarburg, Wis., and Staria (Jeff) Syrjanen and Janine (Wayne) Ziert, both of Crystal Falls; one sister, Bergeda DeMuri of Florence, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Fred, and George Sartori, and by two sisters, Bertina Schmidt and Mary Alexa.

Friends may call Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Langenberg Funeral Home - Crystal Falls Chapel where a liturgical prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home and at 11 a.m. at the Guardian Angels Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. Dino Silvestrini, pastor, will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Members of the East Side Veterans Council will Pass in Review Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

FLORENCE, Wis. — Charles (Pete) Edward Davis, 74, of Florence, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at Dickinson Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.

He was born April 15, 1933, in Tipler, Wis., son of the late Arvie Smith and Lucille (Martinson) Davis.

In December 1953, he married Mary Meyers and they had five children together. In July 1986, he married Joyce Wilson.

Pete was a logger, hauled milk for Frigo, worked construction and at Lodal until his retirement in 1996. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping, raised geese, rabbits, chickens and enjoyed working in his huge garden.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Davis; three sons, Steve, Chuck, and Raymond; three daughters, Linda Klahn (Al) Baumgart, Carmen Davis, and Lori (Jim) Parnitzke; six stepchildren, Rick Foltz, Randy (Denise) Foltz, Violet Dickenson, Jeannie (Ron) Minnick, Rene’ Davis and Sam Chavez; 17 grandchildren, Kim Davis, Josh (Tina) Davis, Michelle (Eric) Voland, Kim (Corey Stoeckigt) Dedering, Chad (Chris Stannis) Baumgart, Jeremy (Ka Khang) Baumgart, Rhonda (Chris) Dahlby, John Davis, Zibby (Scott) Strasser, Steven (fiance, Sarah Maxon) Davis, Marvin Davis, Carrie Jo (Sean) Bright, Katrina Kroeplin, Alan Foltz, Nicolas Gonzales, Brandon Foltz and Edwin Chavez; 15 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Arnie and Dale Smith, both of Baraboo, Wis.

KINGSFORD — Dorothy M. (Hochmuth) Langlois, 90, of Kingsford, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008.

She was born on Sept. 15, 1917, the daughter of the late Albert and Mabel (Schwartz) Hochmuth of Kingsford.

Dorothy was a “true” homemaker, known for her hospitality and affectionately called “The Bread Lady” for her baking skills and generosity. She was amember of First Presbyterian Church of Kingsford for well over 60 years and served her Lord through the Women’s Association. She was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, loved traveling, and her greatest adventure took her to Kenya, Africa, at age 82.

Dorothy is survived by her three children and their spouses, Karen (Bob) Allen of Appleton, Wis., Joy (Fred) Fregerio of Clover, S.C. and David (Annie) Langlois of Florence, Wis.

She will be missed by her four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, as well as her sister, Helen Gustafson of Kingsford; her

special niece, Laura (Bill) Stanek of Kingsford; and sisters-in-law, Sarajane Hochmuth of Green Bay, Wis. and Marie Scavarda of Gilbert, Ariz.

Eugene, her beloved husband of 53 years, preceded her in death in 1993.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 11 a.m. to noon at First Presbyterian Church, 395 Hamilton Ave. in Kingsford, followed by a memorial service at noon.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

IRON MOUNTAIN — Joyce Kampo, 81, of W-8007 Dawns Lake Road, Iron Mountain, died peacefully at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at her daughter’s home in Normal, Ill.

She was born on Oct. 30, 1926, in Florence, Wis., daughter of the late Christopher and Iva (Kinnear) Fraker. She graduated from Florence High School in 1944.

Joyce married Herman Kampo on Aug. 9, 1947, in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 2004. She was a member of Balsam Street Christian Church in Kingsford. Joyce enjoyed reading, spending time with family, Christian music and attending her church.

She is survived by two daughters, Gail (Tom) Wroblewski of Normal and Cherry (Lawrence “Dale”) Lindberg of Iron Mountain; two grandchildren, Karin (Chris) Severns of Cincinnati and Chris (Rachel) Wroblewski of Smyrna, Tenn.; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Breana Severns.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Henry Fraker; two sisters, June Holmberg and Florence Lutter and son-in-law, Richard Litersky.

Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Fairway Knolls Church of the Nazarene, Bloomington, Ill., with Pastor Tim George officiating.

Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park in New Berlin, Wis.

Joyce was a much loved and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed by her family. Her strong faith carried her through to the end and is a wonderful testimony to her life.

Born: May 24, 1940 in Bulan, Kentucky

The son of the late William and Laura (Miller) Martin was a lifelong resident. He attended the Florence. WI schools and graduated in 1960.
Dan worked with his dad on the family farm and was also engaged in logging. He enjoyed welding.
Dan served as sexton of Martin Cemetery, Tipler. After he retired, he continued to stake out gravesites. The cemetery was named after his great uncle, Hiram Martin.

He is survived by his brother Tom and sister Annette

Earl Smith, age 86, Tipler, WI died Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls, MI.

Born February 14, 1922 in Tipler

The son of the late Lewis and Molly (Reid) Smith attended the Tipler schools and Florence High School. He was a U.S Army Veteran serving during WWII.

Earl married the former Eileen Shannon on November 29, 1945 at Maple Grove Baptist Church of Tipler and the couple celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in 2007. They were lifelong residents of the area.

Earl was the owner/operator of a restaurant and grocery store called "Mr. Earl's" for several years and the couple also operated Eileen's Foster Home for over 26 years.

He was a member of the Maple Grove Baptist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing and also enjoyed reading and watching old western movies.

He was also preceded in death by brothers; Raymond, Merle, Lewis, and Veeser, and sisters; Elizabeth, Nova, Iva, Cora, and Beulah.

Mary Jane Sullivan, age 83, Long Lake, WI died Thursday, January 10, 2008 in Aurora, CO while visiting family.

Born: March 29, 1924 in Long Lake.

The daughter of the late Walter and Mary Etta (Callahan) Sullivan graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1942. She was employed by Federal Reserve Bank for over 25 years prior to retirement.

Mary was an active member of St. Norbert Catholic Church, where she served as church treasurer and participated in many church activities. She was an active volunteer in her community and served as town clerk of Popple River. She enjoyed the outdoors, country music, and the Green Bay Packers, and centered her life around family and friends.

She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Edward; brothers, Francis, Charles and James; sister Margaret Bey; and survived by two sisters-in-law, Patricia J. Sullivan of Aurora, CO and Beverly I. Sullivan of Crandon, WI; brother-in -law, Duane Bey of Argonne, WI; numerous nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.

Rochelle E. Cook, age 84, of Plainwell, MI formerly of Tipler, WI, died Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at the Borgess Medical Center of Kalamazoo, following an illness.

She was born August 30, 1923 in Tipler to John and Sally (Jones) Martin. After graduating from Iron River High School in 1941, she began working in Kenosha. She later moved to the Kalamazoo area, where she worked for the Kalamazoo Sled Company, Jolly Kids, and the Shakespeare's Company.

Rochelle was a den mother for her son's scout troops.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings: Lillian, Bill, Eve, Joe, Alice, Warren, and Alvin.

died Monday, September 10, 2007 at her home.

Born: May 2, 1933 in Two Rivers, WI

The daughter of the late Lester and Gertrude (Kibby) Prue attended the Hermansville, MI Public Schools. She was employed by the Westside Adult Care Center for many years as a caregiver, retiring in 1990.

She married Martin Menghini on September 3, 1957 in Crandon, WI and the couple made their home in Iron River.

She was an avid sports fan. She loved to work on puzzles, play cards, and do crosswords. She also loved watching birds.

She was also preceded in death by her sister Alice Rabbey.

She is survived by her husband Martin

Mr. Joseph "Joe" LaBelle, age 95, Iron River, MI died Friday, August 31, 2007 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls, MI.

Born: June 3, 1912 in Florence, WI

The son of the late Joseph and Mary (Lietzske) LaBelle attended the Florence, WI and Stambaugh, MI schools. He moved from Florence as a young boy in 1924, settling in West Iron County, MI.
He married the former Betty Verville on September 4, 1943 and the couple made their home in Stambaugh, MI. She preceded him in death on May 13, 1955.
Joe worked for his uncle on his farm and also in the area C.C. Camps. He was later employed as a baker for "Big Joe Bakery", the Roberg Bakery, and retired from Angeli Foods in 1974. Joe's family was his life. His wife Betty died young and he raised their four daughters. He is adored by his grandchildren and his family call him their "IRONMAN". He could handle anything that was dealt to him and made it appear effortless.
He helped many people with their chores after his retirement and was always there for them and his family. Joe was an avid Packer fan.
He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Caspian, MI and the former Blessed Sacrament Church.

Joe was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Marie Maki, three brothers: Edward, Frank, and Verne "Pike", and three sisters: Rose Johnson, Almede Kavech, and Ann Meyers.

He is survived by 3 daughters; Janice (David) Cunningham of Bryant, WI

Joan H.Lambert, age 80, Stambaugh, MI,
died Wednesday, July 4, 2007 at Marquette General Hospital, Marquette, MI

Born January 27, 1926 in West Allis, WI

The daughter of Joseph and Irene (Kriesel) Marcelja attended Milwaukee High School, graduating in 1939.

She was a member of the 879 Local Culinary Union of Fairbanks, working in the culinary field for pipeline construction from 1968 until 1989, when she moved to Stambaugh. She was also a member of the DAV Auxiliary and the American Legion Reino Post 21 Auxiliary. She enjoyed working on ceramics.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph, her mother, Irene Knutson, and two brothers, Joseph and Richard Marcelja.
