Obituary for Frederick Matzke, Original Brown County Democrat,
August ??, 1901 (date of death was 8-24-1901)

The death of Fred Matzke took place at his home in the town of DePere last Saturday morning after several month's illness with bronchitis, followed by dropsey.

Mr. Matzke was a well known old settler of Brown County who enjoyed the esteem and friendship of a wide circle of friends.  He was born in Prussia in 1826 and shortly after his marriage to Mary Hertha in 1855 he came to the United State, locating at Green Bay and afterwards at Bellevue.  In 1864 he enlisted in the 44th Wisconsin Volunteers and after a year's service was honorably discharged.  After the war he settled on a farm in the town of DePere where he resided ever since.  For several years he was a supervisor and treasurer of the school district.

He is survived by a widow and ten children who mourn the loss of a husband and father.  The children are:
    August of Glenmore
    Mathias of Preble
Anna (Mrs. W. Fonder) of Rhone, Col.
Mary (Mrs. A. Radke) of Fond du Lac
Rose (Mrs. Joseph Kaster) of DePere
    Paul of Glenmore
Theresa (Mrs. J. Becher) of Preble
    Sylvester of Montana
Lizzie (Mrs. Emil Daisch) of Green Bay
    Philip at home

All of these except Mrs. Fonder attended the funeral which was held from St. Mary's Church Monday morning.  Solemn requiem mass was sung by Rev. Father Verstegen assisted by Rev. Father Smitz and Gallagher as deacon and sub-deacon, after which the remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of
mourning relatives and friends, giving proof of the esteem in which the deceased was held.  The pallbearers were:  John Dollar, John Doherty, H. Dollar, J. Dernback, F. Biebel, and C. Kaster.

Mrs. Matzke and children wish to express their thanks to all neighbors and friends who so kindly assisted them during their bereavement.
