Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor� to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Art A. Anderson was Washburn's chief of police. William Robinson will give
a piano recital at the home of his mother, Mrs. Alice Robinson.
(This column is dedicated in memory of my friend, William Robinson.)
Births: A girl to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gierzak on Feb. 8; a boy to Mr. and
Mrs. Marvin (Dolly Trempe) Wallin on Feb. 12. Mrs. May Greenwood
entertained the Quilting Club which consisted of members: Theodora
Anderson, Katherine Buzard, Mrs. C.F. Morris, Mrs. John Gibson, Mrs.
E.C. Hart and Mrs. R.W. Smith. (Theodora Anderson taught kindergarten
for many years at DuPont. Katherine Buzard was once Washburn's city
treasurer.) Mrs. Walter Howell served a luncheon to Mesdames Leon Potter,
V.E. Brubaker, Peter Jacobson, Thomas Moore. J.L. Filbey, M.E. Stapelton and

Washburn wins the Indianhead with a 12-4 record. They beat Bayfield in
their first tournament game 54-40 and playing in the game were Arnson,
Bratley, Lukaskawcez, Bellile, Anderson, Warren, Raarup, Stefinske and
Lindblad. (Jerry Gierzak was out with the flu.) Births: A daughter to Mr.
and
Mrs. LeRoy Leadholm on Feb. 7; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. (Charlotte
Howell) William Weber on Feb. 19; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Francis
Viater on Feb. 16. Christ Lutheran choir officers: president, Carol Smith;
vice president, Laverne Ledin; secretary, Nona Olson, treasurer, Tommy
Swanson; and librarians, Doris Stefinske and Ruth Steen. Mrs. Catherine
Donahue, 84, passed away. (She was John Donahue's wife and an early Washburn
pioneer. At the time of her death, she was the oldest woman of the early
settlers in town.) Ora Brink celebrated his 65th birthday on Feb. 16.

WHS FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) students who
participated in an FBLA contest included John and Jewel Pickert, Leonard
Conklin, Larry Olson and Robin Anderson. Their adviser was Fred Schlichting.
Winter Carnival queen candidates of 1975: Debbie Gasperini, Doris Anderson,
Brenda Dashner, Barb Peterson and Terri Schillinger. Charley Nemec's seventh
grade class went to Duluth's Channel 8 and presented a program which they
wrote about our past. Born: A boy to Mr.
and Mrs. Duane Swanson on Feb. 15. On the WHS Castle Guard basketball
tournament team: Billy Doucette, Alan Copperud, Gary Copperud, Peter
Sneed, Scott Foss, Dan Hovey, Scott Sneed, Larry Bodin, Scott Beeksma,
Greg Schillinger, Tom Bodin and Jeff Bellile. They were coached by Robert
Gasperini.

On the WHS boys tournament basketball team were: Casey Sarver,
Kyle and Kurt Kick, Ray Dickerhoff, Eric Gilbert, Josh Blakely, Brad Farrar,
Jason Roy, Reid Fischer, Arnie Siroin and Clint Day, with Dan Karius coach
and manager Dustin Hagstrom. On the WHS girls basketball team were
Becky Werner, Denise Carlson, Jodi Amrein, Lynn Young, Chris Carlson,
Tammy LaFramboise, Nicki Kurschner, Heather Hagstrom, Jennifer Young
and Tami Guske with coach Casey Agostine. Dan Hudson was honorably
discharged from the U.S. Air Force. Some places from 1990: Olson
Building Supplies, Leino's Gas and Goods, the Gym Nest, Superbowl,
Doris' Bar, Ross Marine, Ray's Auto Body, Time Out, Bachand Plumbing &
Heating, Ungrodt's Hardware, Patsy's Bar, Sandie's Log Cabin Restaurant,
