MILL AT WRIGHTS DESTROYED BY FIRE

The saw mill at Wrights caught fire last Saturday fore noon at eleven o'clock and burned to the ground. The mill is a total loss to Holmes Bros., of Portland, who recently sustained the loss of their planing mill by fire. Fortunately the fire did not reach the lumber yard in which hundreds of thousands of feet of fine lumber was piled. Their loss will be in the neighborhood of $25,000 with only a partial insurance. It is thought the fire originated from shavings and sawdust; that the strong wind of that day blew a spark into the tinder dry interior of the mill. As there was very little fire protection, the only thing that could be done was to prevent it from spreading to the lumber yard. The planer shed to take the place of the old one that had been burned recently was likewise saved, the wind fanning the flames in the other direction. This company will doubtless rebuild immediately, as they had a fair market and were cutting from 30,000 to 40,000 feet of lumber daily. They have a mile of tram, and several logging engines as well as a full equipment of modern sawmill machinery. Upwards of 30 men were employed at the mill and in the woods, who will be for the present out of employment.
