African American Civil War Soldiers by the Name of Wells


In actual numbers, African American soldiers comprised 10% of the entire Union Army. Losses among African Americans were high, and from all reported casualties, approximately one-third of all African Americans enrolled in the military lost their lives during the Civil War. As far as can be determined, only the Union army used African American soldiers in combat. The south was preparing to introduce their own units with African American soldiers when the war ended.
