African American Civil War Soldiers by the Name of Wells
In actual numbers, African American soldiers comprised 10% of the
entire Union Army. Losses among African Americans were high,
and from all reported casualties, approximately one-third of all
African Americans enrolled in the military lost their lives during
the Civil War. As far as can be determined, only the Union army used
African American soldiers in combat. The south was preparing to introduce
their own units with African American soldiers when the war ended.
