Bring your family artifacts and heirlooms to learn how to care for these treasures, understand their values, and how values can change over time. This will also provide an opportunity to share your item’s fascinating stories passed from generation to generation.

Lisa Oberg,'s inspired by the Bicentennial, Lisa began researching her family history at the age of 12. She’s especially enamored with her Luxembourg ancestors. Lisa received her library degree from the University of Washington, where she is the Associate Director of Special Collections. Lisa has taught numerous online courses aimed at library staff serving genealogists. She also serves on the advisory board for the UW's Genealogy and Family History program, a certificate she received in 1996.

Supplemental Census Records

    The U.S. government also collected non-population, special supplemental censuses, collecting territorial data, agriculture, manufacturing, slave schedules, state, veterans, social statistics, and mortality (causes of death).  Learn to locate images of the censuses and how to email images or save images to USB flash or thumb drives.

Pre-Registration required before each class
Register before the next South King County Genealogical Society meeting or email the list of classes you plan on attending to Winona Laird.

Classes will be held after the General Meeting.  Classes will be in the Theater and will start at Noon and will last for 50 minutes.

How to create and edit PowerPoint presentations.

    The Technology User Group is intended for genealogist who use personal computers, tablets, and smart phones for research and records management. The group meets the first Monday after the general meeting to discuss the best use of each, share knowledge and experience, learn about information technology, including tools, media, apps and websites.

The new topic/assignment/lesson will be to write a first draft narrative (or a research outline) of a famous OR infamous ancestor, with as much information as possible.

Key Records for U.S. Genealogy Research Before 1850

This class will explore the methodologies and key record sources for genealogy research pre-1850 in the U.S. The presentation will include examples of key record sources which can aid in proving relationships between generations. Examples will include records from probate, land and deeds, tax records, court records, church records, bible records, military pensions, immigration records and newspapers.

Presented by Janice Blackhurst

Janice Blackhurst has more than 30 years’ experience in genealogy research and has been working professionally as a genealogist for the past 8 years. She started her business Genea In A Bottle in 2009 (www.geneainabottle.com) and has completed many projects for individual clients and subcontracted to companies such as Genealogyfreelancers.com , Genealogists.com, HeirSearch and Sogeni S.A. located in Switzerland. Janice became an accredited Genealogist (AG®) in 2014 accrediting in the Gulf South United States. She is a member of the International Commission for the Accreditation of Genealogists, the Association of Professional Genealogists and a member of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. She has presented many lectures in the Seattle area and at Family History Expos. She especially loves researching in her accredited area but has broad research experience in all of the U.S. and many international countries. Due to the history of the U.S. south, she has wide experience with Spanish records and documents and Hispanic genealogy. Her international research projects have included ancestries in England, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Mexico, Spain, France, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Poland and the Caribbean. Her background in Spanish is a great benefit in researching records in other languages. She also spends many hours volunteering as a Family History Consultant for the LDS church, and presents often at the Susan Woodin Chapter of the NSDAR.

    Newspapers records include announcements, obituaries, anniversaries, legal notices, letters to the editor, social columns filled with personal news of the daily experiences and lives of your family and their neighbors.  Learn how to access a variety of historical newspapers to see you ancestors as part of a larger community.
