INTRODUCTION TO THE CATALOG
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How do I use this online catalog?
  • I've found a resource that I'd like to see - where can I find it in the FHC?
  • I know the number of the film I want to see; can I find out if it's part of the FHC collection?
  • How will this online catalog be updated?
  • Where is the FHC located? What are the hours of operation?

This online Holdings Catalog is arranged the same way as the Family History Library Catalog - TOPICS appear first, followed by LOCALITIES.  An example: in the Germany Collection, general topics like GAZETTEERS or EMIGRATION and IMMIGRATION are followed by individual German states like BADEN or EAST PRUSSIA.

Each resource line contains the following information -

TITLE / CONTENT: The actual title of the resource may be shortened. Sometimes only content is given

RESOURCE NUMBER: For most microfilm and microfiche, this is the number assigned by the Family History Library Catalog.

  • 0xxxxxx - microfilm on indefinate loan (FHL catalog number)
  • 1xxxxxx - microfilm on indefinate loan (FHL catalog number)
  • 2xxxxxx - microfilm on indefinate loan (FHL catalog number)
  • 3xxxxxx - privately purchased microfilm donated by patron
  • 40xxxxx - books (unpublished, inc. research notebooks)
  • 41xxxxx - books (published; includes dictionaries)
  • 42xxxxx - periodicals
  • 43xxxxx - misc photocopies
  • 47xxxxx - videos
  • 48xxxxx - compact disks (CDs)
  • 6xxxxxx - microfiche from Salt Lake City (FHL catalog number)
  • 7xxxxxx - microfiche donated by patron

TYPE - Is the resource a microfilm (FILM), microfiche (FICHE), periodical (PER), book (BOOK), video (VID) compact disk (CD)?

WHERE TO FIND IT - Where you can find the resource in the Family History Center.

  • FILMS are filed numerically in the film cabinets, with the exception of Washington State Death Records, which are found in cabinet 5
  • MICROFICHE are filed numerically in Cabinet 2.
  • For BOOKS, PERIODICALS and other PRINT RESOURCES, the SPINE LABEL is given; PRINT MATERIALS are stored in book cases near the staff desk.
  • COMPACT DISKS are filed by Resource Number at computer stations.
  • VIDEOS can be found in the book case behind the staff desk.

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE MICROFILM OR MICROFICHE NUMBER -

If you've used the FHL catalog (on FamilySearch.org), and want to know if the Everett FHC has a copy of a particular film or fiche, you can use the FILM/FICHE NUMBER SEARCH PAGE. This list is NUMBERS ONLY - no titles are given.
