LOCAL NOTES
   Lee GUTHRIE came over from Spokane yesterday.
   J. P. SHARP returned from California the early part of the week.
   Mrs. Dr. SLOAN of Roslyn visited Mrs. W. R. ABRAMS last week.
   Mrs. S. M. GRAFF and Mrs. A. H. STULFAUTH gave a tea party jointly Tuesday afternoon.
   Bank examiner E. T. WILSON returned from a tour of his bailiwick on Wednesday.
   Judge GRAVES will open court at North Yakima on next Monday morning , adjourned from February 6th.
   Mrs. C. W. JUUL is prepared to give piano lessons.  For information, inquire at the Register office.
   Mr. C. L. COLLINS is again about his place of business.  He has been confined to the house with sciatic rhumatism.
   Arguments on the motion for a new trial in the case of the State vs. Cal HALE will be heard in chambers some time next week.
   Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. AGATZ were over to the sound Thursday and will return today.  Mr. AGATZ was called upon for the transaction of
K. of P. business.
   J. W. HOGAN went to Tacoma Wednesday on business, returning today.  He is preparing to open up one of the largest stocks of goods ever
brought into Ellensburgh.
   FLYNN, the tonsorial artist, defies competition in his line.  He can supply every want from any kind of bath to the latest in hair
dressing.
   The deep snow has been extremely hard on the range stock this winter.  Ben E. SNIPES estimates his loss at fully three-fourths of the
band on the range.  He is feeding but 250 head of cattle.
   Frank McCANDLESS returned Friday morning from an extended trip to California where he has been enjoying a much needed vacation...
   Snow is reported to be 18 feet deep on the eastern slopes of the Cascades.  This vast watershed is a never failing reservoir for our
supply of water...
   Three little tramp boys arrived Wednesday night from the east, apparently from 10 to 12 years of age.  One hails from Helena, another
from Spokane, and one topsy-like, from nowhere.  They are well-dressed and bright appearing little fellows.  They bum their way by singing
in the saloons and on street corners.  Yesterday deputy sheriff BANKS telegraphed their parents for instructions.  They will undoubtedly be
sent home.
   Miss Nettie EVANS, wife of the late D. I. EVANS, has received a check from the New York Life insurance company for $2500, acknowledgement
of which was made to the local agent H. H. WILKINS, this week at the time of paying the policy held by Mr. EVANS, the body had not been
found, and out of about $12,000 insurance it is the only policy settled...

A PLEASANT TRIBUTE
   The social event of the week was the fancy dress party given on the evening of St. Valentine's day by Mr. and Mrs. H. W. THEISEN at their
residence on Walnut street in honor of Mr. A. N. TOBLE, an attache of the national bank of which Mr. THEILSEN is cashier.  
   Principal among the features of the evening's entertainment were a Valentine postoffice, the game of progressive hearts and the "lost
peanuts".... Two prizes each for ladies and gentlemen were offered, one of the greatest number found and one for the least.  The first prize
for the ladies, a gilded peanut necklace, was awarded to Miss PROWELL; the "booby" prize, a gilded onion to Miss Maude PAINTER.  Those of
the gentlemen were awarded, first to C. D. WOODWORTH a japanese peanut doll, the booby going to Mr. GRAVES who took the golden carrot.
   Following these enjoyable diversions, refreshments were announced and the evening's festivities concluded with dancing.  The company was
made up of young people in the circle of Mr. TOBLE's friends, the fortunate ones being: Mr. and Mrs. Rodney PALMER, Mr. and Mrs. H. K. OWENS,
the Misses CARSON, FLYNN, BOYDSTON, Mande and Genie PAINTER, MARQUISS, PROWELL, STAYMAN and Kate BATTERSON, Messrs. C. D. WOODWORTH,
W. GRAVES, Simon FOGARTY, Torriana ROSS and Garrett D'ABLAING.

   The attendance is large and all are making good progress.
   Miss QUINBY and Miss BAKER left for their homes on Sunday last. 
   Miss Mande CHATTERTON is again one of our number having recovered from the injury sustained while skating a few weeks ago.
   Mr. C. W. SCHAFFER, who was a ??? student last year is now married and taking a law course at the Seattle University...

   About January 1, 1893, at Charles SPLAWN's place about one and one-half miles north of west of Thorpe station, a dark bay cayuse, about
13 hands high.  No marks or brands visible.  Is apparently about 4 years old.  Samuel McGINNIS

COUNTY COMMISSIONERS PROCEEDINGS
   Thursday, Feb. 9th, Board met pursuant to adjournment.
      Petition of S. T. STERLING et al for county road allowed.  J. P. SHARP, J. D. D. DANNAN, and W. A. BULL were appointed viewers of the
proposed road to meet with E. J. ANDERSON, surveyor, at the home of J. S. DYSART on the 13th day of April 1893, at 10 a.m. to view, survey
and lay our said road.
