CAPITOLIANS
   Mat FLYNN has opened a fine barber shop in the Shoudy Block.
   Byron CHISHOLM had his shoulder broken last week by a horse jumping on him.
   J. H. WELLS, who has charge of the big ditch, has opened an office in the Shoudy block.
   The suit of RITCHIE vs. the school directors resulted in a verdict for the plaintiff for
$1700.  It will be appealed.
   Mrs. HULL'S exhibit of paintings by her students was well attended last Saturday...
   The Wenatchee Advance says Dr. RICHARDSON was held up there and robbed of $3.  His friends
here will be pleased to hear that he has made a raise over there.
   Company A will leave here next Monday for American Lake, having been detailed to go in
advance of the regiment and get the grounds in order for the encampment.
   The case of the N.P. vs. KILMORE et al, to restrain the defendants from interfering with
the fencing of the right of way, was decided by Judge UPTON last Saturday in favor of the
railroad.
   B. C. PILCHER brought down twenty-four ounces of gold nuggets from his claim on the Swauk
this week and sold them to L. R. GRIMES.  They were very handsome and netted him about $15
per ounce.
   Kentucky isn't in it.  J. L. McDOWELL left at The Capital office this week a bunch of
bluegrass 54 inches high.  It was from his farm on the west side and was an average of the
field.  He has been requested to furnish a large bunch for the World's Fair and has promised
to do so.

SOCIAL AND PERSONAL
   B. C. VAN HOUTEN of Spokane, was in town last Monday.
   A. P. SHARPSTEIN, ex-mayor of Anacortes, was in town last Tuesday.
   Mr. and Mrs. H. W. THIELSEN returned from Portland Tuesday morning.
   Miss MACFARLANE of Seattle, visited friends here during the past week.
   Miss Annette DAY, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., is visiting her cousin, Ralph KAUFFMAN.
   Mrs. HUGHES, wife of Rev. T. B. HUGHES of the Baptist church, arrived from the east last
Monday.
   W. A. FORD has returned from a trip into the Colville and Okanogan regions, which he
pronounces the greatest mineral country he has ever seen.
   Dr. NEWLAND has returned from New York, where he took a three month's post graduate course
of lectures... He has resumed his practice here.
   Miss NORRIS and Miss RICE, the popular Normal teachers, leave tomorrow, the former going to
her St. Louis home and the latter to Spokane.  Their many friends which them a pleasant
vacation...
   A 10-pound boy put in his appearance at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. GRAFF last evening...

A BRAVE BOY
   Last Monday Lee, the 13 year old son of S. W. BARNES, obtained the permission of his parents
to take a drive with the gentle family horse.  Taking J. R. WALLACE's 5-year-old boy with him,
he started out.  When near BROWN's slaughter house, he drove into a fearful mire and horse and
buggy were immediately swamped.  The little boy got frightened, but Lee did not lose his
presence of mind and soon succeeded in getting the child on solid ground.  Meantime the horse
had floundered about in the mud and finally got clear under.  The boy, however, got his head
above the mud and succeeded in keeping it raised until he got the traces unfastened.  By a
supreme effort he got the horse up and out of the mire, and leaving the buggy, the two children
walked to their homes, leading the besmeared and almost dead horse.  This is not the first time
such a thing has happened there and the attention of the road supervisor is called to the
matter ...

admitted to the bar last Saturday.  He was examined by Ralph KAUFFMAN and H. J. SNIVELY and
passed without any trouble...
