     In a letter to William FREYBURGER, Lester WISHARD who has been stationed in Chinese waters for some time, says he has just re-enlisted
for another four years. He is the chief electrician on the "Palos". J. H. LODERHOSE has leased his farm in this valley and is located at Prosser as purchasing agent for Denny Brothers, big apple buyers
of Chicago. He will move his family down as soon as school is out.

BRIEF NEWS OF THE DAY

O. S. BENNETT died at his home on Capital avenue on Monday. Among those driving new cars here are Mrs. H. W. WAGER, J. H. MORGAN, and John CLYMER. There is no occasion for a panic, but smallpox has been declared officially to exist in Kittitas County. After holding court in Seattle for a week, Judge DAVIDSON was called to Yakima for similar work. The jury will be called in the superior court next Tuesday, the 8th, there is a pretty fair sized docket. Messrs. BRILEY, SPARKS, LASH, SAVER, and E. K. BROWN, who went to the Sound to take the examination for commissions, have not heard the
result of their effort. W. E. NICKERSON, the new leader of the Elks band, is bringing the boys up to proficiency at a rapid rate and is receiving many compliments
on his good work. D. H. DICKSON, who was prominent in military work here in the organization of the cavalry troop, has been commissioned second lieutenant
of a new troop that has just been formed at Wenatchee. The new Christian Science church, on Anderson street, between Third and Fourth, is receiving the finishing touches and will be ready for
use next Sunday morning.

SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

H. C. ACKLEY is quite ill in the McClanahan hospital. Henry KLEINBERG spent the first part of the week in Seattle. Harold SPALDING is around after having had his tonsils removed. B. F. REED has returned from Kansas, where he was called by the death of his father. Mrs. B. L. BURCHAM, of Spokane, is visiting her daughters, Mrs. SPAULDING and Mrs. LAUDERDALE. Mrs. A. C. STEINMAN of Yakima, has been visiting her sister, Mrs. C. E. WHEELER. Fred BUTCHER, now a resident of Walla Walla, was visiting old friends here this week. Mrs. W. V. E. ROBBINS of Grandview is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. L. FINLEY. A report from Seattle says Glenn STEWART has enlisted for the ambulance service in France. Miss Elizabeth PAUTZKE entertained friends at dinner Sunday evening. Miss Arline BARKWELL has returned from Cle Elum where she visited friends. Mrs. R. A. WEAVER is enjoying a visit from her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. HUBBELL of Tacoma. Miss Anne SANDER has returned from New York and other eastern points where she has been visiting for several months. A. D. POYSER, who went to Auburn a few weeks ago for his health is improving so rapidly that he is already talking of coming home. Rev. H. I. OBERHOLTZER, who succeeds Rev. REESE as pastor of the Episcopal church, has arrived and will preach his first sermon on
Sunday. His wife came with him. Earl WELSH, a former Ellensburg boy, who has been living in Pasco, passed through here on Monday enroute to the Sound to enlist. His
brother, Wm. D. WELCH, enlisted some time ago. Receiver JACOBSEN is making cider every day at the Ellensburg Brewing and Mining company's plant.

SMALLPOX CASES APPEAR IN THE VALLEY

Like the thief in the night, the old dreaded smallpox has made its appearance in the community, first appearing in the country, and the
doctors and hospitals have already taken steps to combat the disease, which has lost most of its terrors through vaccination... The present
outbreak is not considered a bad one and it is hoped early grappling with it will make its run short lived...

ROAD TO YAKIMA NOW IN GOOD SHAPE

Excellent roads were encountered between Ellensburg and North Yakima by President George H. BLACK of the Ellensburg normal school, who
motored down on Thursday to attend a meeting of North Yakima teachers, says the Republic. He was accompanied by Mr. WOLFF of the board and
