ELLENSBURG BOY FROM U-BOAT ZONE
Harry B. MILES Tells of His Experience on the Atlantic and Mediterranean
   In a two column article on the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle of recent issue
appeared a good picture of a former Ellensburg boy and an interview telling of his experiences
in Atlantic and Mediterranean waters.  The young man is Harry M. MILES, son of Mrs. W. W.CARRUTH
and he was born in Ellensburg, living here until he was nearly grown.  His home is now in
Oakland.  When The Capital printed a letter from Lester WISHARD, sent from the upper Yangtze
river a few months ago, the writer mentioned MILES, but said he was leaving then and he has
since that time seen the service he mentions.  Young MILES is rated as a chief carpenter's mate,
and he has just re-enlisted after honorable discharge and declared he especially requested
service on the Atlantic.  His services were with the chaser fleet and he has had experience
with German submarines in the Mediterranean and outside Gibralter in the Atlantic.  His interview
is most interesting as he touches intelligently on points he has visited and conditions...  At
Gibralter, says MILES, so many search lights are playing all the time over the waters that it
is a magnificent sight.  He declares he has enjoyed every hour of his enlistment and is anxious
to get back in the active zone.
   This young man is a nephew of Mrs. Jennie D. BANKS and a cousin of C. R. and Robert HOVEY;
also a half brother of "Bun" FOSTER.   

ADDITIONAL NEWS ITEMS 
   The funeral of Thomas McCAUSTLAND, the well-known pioneer of the valley, was held at the
Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon and was one of the largest seen here in years.  It was one
evidence of his many friends and was a tribute to his popularity and worth.
   Mrs. E. K. BROWN has had a cable from her husband announcing his safe arrival across the
water.
   The sudden death of R. H. SHOMAKE came as a great surprise in this community where he had
lived for many years.

BRIEF NEWS OF THE DAY
   Have you bought your War Savings stamps?
   Fred GILMOUR has purchased the Malcolm McLENNAN home on Craig hill and is occupying it.
   J. H. SMITHSON shipped a bunch of fine beef cattle to the Sound this week.
   Twenty-six eighth grade students were graduated into the high school Friday evening.
   White fishing is said to be very good now and some big baskets are being taken out of the
river.
   A new auto is seen on the streets every few days now, which may be an indication of spring.
   The bad weather in the middle west is still manifest in the failure of through trains to get
in on time.
   All who have come over the Cascades recently agree that there is very little snow along the
railroads, even on the summit.
   The Cascade Irrigation district is at work on the problem of repairing the damage done to
the canal by the floods.
   There have been more than the usual number of uniforms seen on our streets lately, the boys
being on pass from their Sound bases.
   E. C. HORGAN has bought the J. B. MOSER farm on the east side, according to Whitefield's
record of transfers.  The consideration appears as $13,000.
   It is reported that Mrs. W. D. FARLEY has brought suit for a large amount against the North
Bank road for the loss of her husband who was killed while sleeping in a caboose while off duty.
   C. E. WHEELER has received word from his son, Leon, in Springfield, Mass., saying when he
was ready to cross the water he was requested to remain in the arsenal and act as an instructor
in machine gun assembling and practice.
   The reported killing in France of one of the Oregon boys, named WATTS, well known here, has
been contradicted...
   Land owners with creek rights are not backward in expressing their apprehension about the
water prospects this season.  They are agreed that the dryest season ever known is staring them
in the face.
   
C. R. HADLEY NOW COUNTY COMMISIONNER OF FOODS
   Designation of county food administrators as official representatives of the federal food
administrator and the United States food administration has been made by the food administrator
for Washington...  C.R. HADLEY is at the head of this movement in Kittitas County.

SOCIAL AND PERSONAL
   O. E. DRAPER of the normal is recovering from a severe illness.
   A. C. KREESE was a Toppenish visitor early in the week.
   Mrs. Howard LEWIS spent Sunday with her husband in camp.
   There will be a pre-lenten dance at the parish house Friday evening.
   Miss Marian FAUST is recovering from a severe operation.
   W. G. LAUDERDALE has returned from an eastern buying trip that took him as far as New York.
   E. E. WAGER is again at his office after an illness of a couple of weeks.
   Ed McDONALD who recently moved to Grandview, was visiting old friends here on Sunday.
   Harold SPALDING went to Seattle yesterday with a view to enlisting in the navy.
   Sammy CLERF, who enlisted in the navy, spent Sunday with his mother here.
   G. W. CALLENDAR, who has been of the high school faculty, left on Monday with his family for
Vancouver, Wash.
   W. T. DARBY of the university faculty is here looking over his orchard property preparing to
spend the summer in the work.
   Late reports from Oliver HINMAN, who has been very ill in Portland, say he is rapidly
improving, being now able to walk around the block and be out in the open a great deal.

RED CROSS GENERAL GETS GOOD RESULTS
   Along with all her other multitudinous duties, Mrs. Henry KLEINBERG, head of the local Red
Cross, has found time to have compiled and printed in this issue of the Capital rules governing
the knitting of socks...
