Articles Relating to Czech-Slovak Research

Greetings!

On a rainy morning fourteen of us showed up to share and learn.

Welcome to Velma and Larry Vogltanz from Bainbridge Island. They are researching Vogel, Kubes and Vogltanz. Darlene Lang told them about us.

Also welcome to Jessica Cook, my second cousin once removed! We met for the first time at the meeting! We were thrilled! It took a trip to PA for me to find her and her mom here in WA state!

Mary Kizer went to the National Archives here and looked at the 1930 census. She had been told to find the enumeration district before hand under the county name on the search engines!! that helped!

Bob and Gladys Shipek found the Shipek name (from Texas yet) in the new surname index.

Eric Taylor did some gentle consistent communication and shared the result: a picture he received of his grandfather with his second wife. Eric also found THE COASTS OF BOHEMIA at Half Price Books which gives insight to the Czech history. I also heard it is excellent.

Mary Trimingham wrote to the old country and received an English version of her family roots.

Rose Gresser came, sharing insights on the Festival in her ancestral village of Vlcnov.

Jean Heath visited the Cedar Rapids Cz/Slo Museum on the day the the Czechoslovak Gen. Soc Internat'l was meeting! She and her husband enjoyed their visit.

Darlene is now working on the the other side of her family, putting together another cook book.

Juanita brought old WI State Gen. Soc. Quarterlies for the Family History Fair in March, besides an update on her research.

Martha is working through the Ellis Island websight, she had some things for us to discuss.

There were many adventures from my trip the the CR to share, plus we had a mini-lesson on "applications for naturalization". That's how I found more information for Jessica and myself! Also, now we have a handout about YOU actually going to the archives in the old country and finding info by yourself.

The next handout opened a can of worms, so next time we will do an in depth study of how to use the SOUPIS PODDANYCH PODLE VIRY books. That is Lists of Serfs according to Religion in 1651, translated.

Announcements!

1) THREE CHEERS! There will be another Family History Fair at Crossroads on March 15. PUT THAT ON YOUR CALENDAR. If you have any books or genealogy quarterlies to donate for their used book sale, PLEASE BRING THEM TO OUR JAN. 25th MEETING!

2)NEXT MEETINGS: Jan. 25 (yes, that is later than normal) and March 22, 2003

3)HOMEWORK FOR NEXT MEETING! FIND YOUR TOWN OR VILLAGE CREST! Yes, most of them have a crest. www.name of your village.cz for CR research. Or try the name of your town on a yahoo or google search engine.

4) We will be celebrating the the beginning of our FIFTH YEAR by having a Kolachy Festival. We took a collection for Kolachy from the Czech Bakery in West Seattle. Jessica will pick them up Friday evening. Please let me know you are coming so we know how many to order. Then you can reimburse us at the meeting. They are $2 apiece. It is a dear price, but we thought since we live so far from kolach country, we are lucky to find some!

5) We will be discussing orders for the glass figurines from the glass factory in Zeleny Brod. I brought two on my trip and shared them with the group. These are figurines that show what my Czech and Moravian relatives did. I have a tailor, shoemaker, bricklayer, the babicka with her prayer book, etc. I want to special order coalminers and folkdancers.

HAPPY RESEARCHING!!!!!!!

Rosie
