Welcome to new member GERRY LOVCHIK! Gerry is researching LOVCIK, KADLEC, KOLAR & CERVENKA in North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. He is going to share the Pisek ND Czech history book with us. Gerry was very interested in "What is a Rusyn" as Collie was using the term from his conference. This led to an interesting discussion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rusyns

ALLAN & JULIE PESCHEK are donating a copy of SLOVAKS IN AMERICA by Konstantin Culin, translated by CGSI, to the Taocma Public library. Bellevue Regional Library has a copy in the reference section. Allan has been researching at the Family History LIbrary and reports that LDS has a new DATA BASE that can only be accessed by certain people at the Family History Libraries ... so call ahead if you want to use it!

JEANETTE HOUSNER 's sister-in- law received email from relatives doing research in the CR. She has also been Googling her villages north of Pilsen and has been very successful!!

MIKE MECHAM has been going thru microfilms at a Family History Center and found Barb Callahan's ancestors' names. So he gave the info to Barb and then Jo Herber helped figure out some of the information. GREAT NETWORKING! Mike is researching his Slovak relatives that came thru Alberta. He added to the discussion about the importance of health history found in our research. By the way, Mike works for Google and enjoyed hearing our many references to Google.

COLLIE LISKA went to The Federation of East European Family History Society's conference in PA in August. (http://feefhs.wordpress.com/) Collie has attended these conferences before. Stephen Morse (has an excellent website: http://stevemorse.org/) was a speaker who had so much to help researchers. You must Czech out his website!!!!!!!!!!!!! Marilyn Holt, head of the Pennsylvania Department of the Carnegie Library, was also a guest speaker. Collie shared about the conference, city trips, culture events that all led him to the right direction now to do his research. And, of course, there will be another convention, stay tuned!!!!

JO HERBER has been using Google to get her village's crest, also found the website for her village that provided great networking. She also shared that DNA testing can be done to determine if two women have the same father.

BETTELINN BROWN shared maps she bought at the CGSI Conference in Madison, she is now ready to work on the KRIZEK side of the family. Of course everyone told her to Google the name!

BONNIE PASEK ALLAN shared the information of her family history through wonderful picture albums and the work done by a researcher in the CR who went back 4 generations. IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN A COPY OF THE HISTORY OF LONSDALE , MN, LET HER KNOW. Bonnie Pasek Allan Bonnie sat next to JOANN PASEK . Those two have to figure out if they are related!!

JOANN PASEK used Wikipedia to learn about the Slavic Peoples: ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavic_people ). Did you know there are Eastern Slaves, Western Slaves and Souther Slaves? This article discussed this plus gives more information.

BEV RYDER is plugging away with getting her family DNA tested. She has gotten her brother to be tested. Now they are waiting for more results. Bev had a sweet picture of a grandbaby to share. You know, that is why we do this researching!!!

RUZE GRESSER started an interesting discussion about finding so many illegitimate children on church records. Most men could not get married til they completed their military obligation..which could be 12 years or more sometime. And part of that was as reserves. Special permission had to be given before completing that obligation. Later on the children would be legitimatized by the church. Well, that was one reason many researchers did not realize. She also shared that if you are first generation American you could go back to the CR to become a citizen.

BARB CALLAHAN just received a family chart printed by color code from European relatives. That was interesting. She had suggestions , too, to set up family & village websites by researchers. Plus she had a grandbaby picture to share.

MARTHA SOLTESZ shared that a state register in Virginia from years 1903 - 1946 stated that people were either white or black. There was no place for Indians to be recorded. That made it difficult for researchers later on. So ... that could have happened in other situations, too, giving us as researchers a challenge. Or giving us a brick wall!

I don't think I caught all of you who brought treats. Joann's Italian prunes, fresh form the tree, were good! Jo brought lemon bars...yum, Barb brought brownies, someone ( was that you , Ruze?) brought little coffee cake muffins and then blueberry muffins appeared. I brought cherry tomatoes from my garden. Joann Pasek said there are Czech cherry tomatoes , variety name is STUPICE. Seeds can be bought at garden centers. OH WELL, thanks to all of you who brought the goodies.

SUCH WAS OUR GREAT MEETING. We ended at noon, had a wonderful time with fellowship and sharing.

HAPPY RESEARCHING,

Rosie
