August 26, 2006 Interest Group Mtg Report:

Neat meeting! Twenty of us gathered to share, eat, and network.

Welcome to MONIQUE KENNY who is half Czech and half French. She knows her ancestral village and needed help on what to do from there. HORAK is the name she is researching in Tistin, which is in the Moravian part of the Czech Republic. Monique had a lovely garnet to show us.

Our website: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~wacsig/ Bookmark it! Dumpling news site: http://www.thedumplingnews.com It is full of what's happening!

We discussed hosting the April 2006 Czechoslovakia Genealogy Society International (CGSI) April 2008 Symposium here in the Seattle area. At this point we need a written account of what our responsibilities will be. ALLEN PESCHEK has conference planning experience so he will guide us thru that part. We have some volunteers to help, so that is the status now.

The CGSI Fall 2007 NASE RODINA will be about Czechs and Slovaks in the Pacific Northwest. WHO HAS SOME INFORMATION FOR US ABOUT THIS SUBJECT?

NORB ZIEGLER had written 100 year anniversary letters (since ancestors arrived in USA) to relatives to activate interest, plus shared his Belcik Family book with us. Norb is now the EGS president. Congratations, Norb!!!!

JUDITH BAZANT LUM and DIANA LANSPA are both getting a start in their research, looking for facts and how tos.

BEV RYDER needs to find that ancestral village and wants pictures. Maybe collateral line relatives can help with that!

JO HERBER has been spending a lot of time at Family History Centers looking at the old Slovak birth, death and marriage records. Jo showed us the DNA kits she is taking on her trip to the Czech and Slovak Republics and she brought beautiful old garnets to share. Her two books from the Chicago genealogy group on Personal names are great!!!!!

STEVE SOUCEK shared family garnet cufflinks and a pin with us, plus the name of Euro Bakery in Seattle for great breads! On the internet he and wife Gerri found a lost relative! He also shared lovely Uprka and other artist prints!

ERIC TAYLOR has gotten the word out about his family research thru a personal website. He writes about his 1995 trip to the CR with his mom, his family tree and has the paper he wrote thru the UW Experimental College Genealogy class on this website.

MARY KLANDER has the garnet as her birthstone so she had her garnet necklace to show. Mary has done much research on the Military Draft Register for WWI to find information. Mary comes from Bellingham to our meetings!!

COLLIE LISKA is in his glory! From not even knowing the name of the ancestral village he has progressed to visiting the villages (some are under water now, tho) AND the archives to get information. He and Martha just returned from Helene Cincebeaux's 50th Anniversary Tour to Slovakia with pictures, mementos, copies of certiticates and the biggest smile!! Congratulations, Collie!

BARB CALLAHAN had lovely Czech garnets and amber to share!

MARILYN ARNOLDI had the most beautiful crystal necklace from Czechoslovakia. She also baked the best poppy seed roll! The shiny crystal necklace prompted a conversation about KUSKA CUT GLASS WORKS at 1911 22nd Avenue South (south of I 90 Martin Luther King Way). 206 324 2931. Stop by to see their lovely crystal. They always have a fall and spring sale. Call to get on their mailing list. You go in the door and it just sparkles, just like Marilyn's necklace!!!

BARBARA CLARK is celebrating! (By the way she is an expert on Family History Centers) She has found, Sebirov, her ancestral village in the CR !! THREE CHEERS!! She used our researcher info to select Pathfinders to help her visit that ancestral village. .

GLADYS AND BOB SHIPEK were there early to help set up, they shared the old Czech family jewels and Gladys read about Jacob Furth, a bohemian who founded Puget Sound National Bank in Seattle who was called The Kindly Cashier.. After the Great Fire of 1889 Furth told his bank board of directors to refrain from taking advantage of the ruined by calling in their loans. He was a good guy!

MARTHA SOLTESZ shared this book by William Dollarhide "New York State Censuses and Substitutes". She had borrowed it from the library. That will help my NY research! She also said Sno-Isle Genealogy Society members worked with Edmonds Community College to do a DNA research project for the "female side ".

BETTELINN BROWN shared her filing system with us and showed how she has a Creative Memories project going using family pictures. She brought up the subject of how hard life has been on our relatives in the old countries and maybe we need to find ways to connect with them. On way might be sending our website to them, letting them know many of us are interested in our roots. We should find ways to network with them.

SUPER TREATS! We had to pull one of the tables over for all the goodies! Homemade cookies, chocolates, strudel, European bread with salami and cheese, crackers, poppy seed rolls, Gravenstein apples and more! I was so busy I didn't get there right away! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

NEXT MEETING: OCTOBER 14, 2006 SAME PLACE. SAME TIME!

Happy Researching,

Rosie
