Articles Relating to Czech-Slovak Research

Greetings! Another great meeting!

Thanks to all who provided the great treats!! I gave out the handout of death causes translated from English to Czech, German and Slovak. Using the Google translator ( http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en) it will be easy to do the Latin and Hungarian, too.

We are fortunate to have a national conference for Czech & Slovak research (http://www.cgsi.org/news/events/2011/10/26/cgsi%E2%80%99s-13th-biennial-conference-mo). I encourage people to attend!

Saturday we had 5 new attendees. Welcome to them all. SANDRA and CHUCK HRESIL have moved here from Chicago and are researching the Slovak & Moravian names Bohus, Mateyak, Hucko, and Hresil.

MICHAEL HANK's grandfather was born in Nova Scotia. Mike is researching Hank, Balint and Ban from the Slovak towns of Drazice, Tomasouce, and Feldenince. The sisters

JANIE REISWIG and JULENE PARSONS are researching Marek & Safarik from the towns Ledenice, Malsice, and Kolvin. It was a pleasure to have Janie & Julene attend, their dad was a special friend of my father's!!

ED SCHULTZ announced that Family Search just released thousands of Marriage & Death records. Ed brought his computer and projector so he could show us how to access these records. www.familysearch.org, click on Europe, pick what country you want. Go from there.

Ed also used the computer & projector to help Julene & Janie translate records from the Trebon Regional Archives http://digi.ceskearchivy.cz/ We tried to help with some of the Marek names on birth records. Some were easier, but thank you to Mara Pithkethly for sending the harder copies to her relatives in the CR. It was very interesting to see these old records. Thank you, ED!

DEBBIE HUFF received her ancestor's citizen record through the National Archives in Washington DC via snail mail..cost $65 but received good information.

MARY ANN SOLTESZ shared her success story!! Yeah!!! Instead of writing to her ancestral village mayor or chronicler, she found the village website online and emailed an inquiry to the town hall. After two weeks she received an answer in English and yes, she has relatives there! Mary Ann just returned from a very successful visit to Sabinov, Slovakia! MARTHA SOLTESZ, Mary Ann's mom, had marriage records from the old country that we tried to translate.

A general theme we discussed was that different nationalities live in one area. Very much so for the Ruthenians, according to COLLIE LISKA. There is a Ruthenian national headquarters in Pittsburgh. Collie has returned from his trip to the Midwest. He enjoyed seeing the progress in Cedar Rapids as the NCSML is moving the original museum to a new, higher site. Plus the Czech Village bakery and restaurant are open!! http://www.ncsml.org/

JO HERBER is still using her research skills for her husband's Norwegian background. She has found that the Ellis Island website is now organized by ships. You can go to each ship date and read the whole passenger list.

CAROL STEINHAUER has been visiting Roslyn,WA to get more information about her grandfather, finding more records about him. The Central Archives in Ellensburg has been a big help to her, including a CD of the the famous Roslyn Cemetery.

HELEN LOWE is researching Melnik, CR but has fund the proverbial brick wall when they moved to Prague.

LEE LANGSTAD has a friend who should share her oral history with the National Czech & Slovak Museum and Library. The project has just received more funding to expand the program. Lee is looking for information about Horni Sucha , a suburb of Liberec.

MARA PITKETHLY shared info about "quick reads," or quick response codes. http://www.prepressure.com/library/technology/qr-code These codes are fond on head stones in cemeteries and many other places, like magazines. Czech it out! Mara also told us that Bonhams auction House (www.bonhams.com) will have a fine arts appraisal day in Seattle August 18 - 19. Call 206 218 5011 for information and appointments.

Next meeting is Sept.6, 2011.
