Articles Relating to Czech-Slovak Research

For such a lovely day we had a great turnout! We were about 17 attendees. Many thanks to our treat providers...yum!!!! Welcome to Norb Ziegler who is researching Belcik and Komcik and Peter Halamek who is researching Doubek, Halamek, Segenschmid, and Weidenhoffer!

FIRST SOME BUSINESS: Katarina Gabaniova is helping our group with translations and native wisdom. Her email address is : [email protected] She is also willing to give Slovak lessons.

Florence Zarro sends this Slovak webpage information: The web site for the Slovak PHONE BOOK white pages is: www.zoznamst.sk/sk/index.html. The message also said to "use at least the first three letters of the family name and area code". The Slovak area code map is at: www.centroconsult.sk/facilities/phonemap.html.

This is the Czech white pages: http://www.420.cz/numbers.jsp?ad=true
The columns are:
Prijmeni - Surname
Jmeno - Name
Firma - Company
Kl. slovo - Keyword
Ulice - Street
C. domu - House Number
Obec - Town/Village
Tel.obvod - Phone area (there are 14 areas as are counties in the Czech Rep.)
Pouzivam diakritiku - I use diacritics. Switch this off so you are able to find more people.
Fill in surname and choose one of the 14 areas and click on Osoby (People). You'll get a list of people with that surname in the area.

SUPER SHARINGS!

  • Remember, Ancestry Plus is on the the King County Library System. Use their computers and it's free! If your relatives came first class, they might not be listed on ship logs.
  • If you are bogged down with your direct ancestor, try researching their sisters, brothers, etc. Eric had great success. Even pictures.
  • Social Security applications are Wonderful! They give parents names and places of birth, but they are expensive, but sometimes the only way to find out!
  • Florence Zarro found relative names in the Slovak white pages, wrote to them and got results. Great!
  • From Steve Soucek: www.radioprague.com gives world news in English and Czech links.
  • Steve Morse webpage that helps you research the Ellis Island site better: http://stevemorse.org.
  • Ruze Gresser is bringing her two nieces from Vlcnov to the next meeting to show them people in the USA do care about their Czech and Slovak heritage!

The big discussion was about getting research done by the archives over there. In Salt Lake City I was told that if you requested a small research AT A REGIONAL ARCHIVES they might do it for you. Peter said to get a native to pay for it!!! So we should use connections in the Czech Republic to help us out. By 2004 the State Archives hopes to have the problem solved, which is how to collect the money.

My research trip to the Bohemian Cemetery went well. I had plot # information for one Kratina brother when I arrived, but knew another was buried there. The people in the office give me that information. What a jackpot. There were pictures on most of the family members tombstones, dates, names of the husbands of the daughter. Now I have much telephoning to do. I DO HAVE FORMS TO SEND THERE FOR GENEALOGICAL INFORMATION regarding people buried there.
