Czech/Slovak Interest Group Mtg Report April 16, 2005:

HI!

About 16 of us braved the hard rain to hear Doug Hograth's talk on DNA research. It was very interesting. You could tell he really enjoyed this subject from his thorough talk. He brought handouts to share, they will be on the free table on June 11, also. He discussed following the male and female lines, emphasizing not to expect more than the actual facts. THANKS AGAIN DOUG!!! And to Virginia Kelley for coordinating this visit. Doug is looking for his ancestry village in Bohemia where his Prosek ancestors lived.

Karol Osusly shared the wood cross he made that followed his family's Slovak traditions for many, many years! Karol and his cross were in our local news recently relating to the death of the Pope.

Bruce and Evelyn Landry from Burian came today, also. Bruce has a Kopecky line from Zamrst, a village not far from my Kopecka line near Litomysl! He has had Duncan Gardiner do research for him in Bohemia. The line goes back to 1710!!! WELCOME!

Georgia Slonecker came for her first time. Her family, the Kocoureks, come from Nebraska. She is just starting and has wonderful information from the old country but must find it on the map!

Many thanks to Marjorie Bianco Vernon and Mara Pitkethly for bringing poppyseed lemon cakes. They must be kindred spirits to think of the same good treat!!

Collum Liska shared a newspaper article on the National Geography Society's work on DNA research. A few copies will be on the free table in June. He shared his eBay find, SLOVAKIA AND ITS PEOPLE, with us.

Cheri Smith is going to Bohemia and Slovakia in September with Tom Hrncirek Tours. She will visit the ancestral village Tom found for her. Yeah!!

Mara reminded us that there is Cesky Stul for Czech and Slovak speakers. The information is on our website. She also told us that this summer there will be an intensive Czech language class given by UW.

Mary Kizer had a breakthrough at the National Archives. One of the workers suggested putting just her ancestor's first name for finding the 1910 census in WI and they found the person!!!!!

Florence Zarro is looking forward to Slovak visitors this summer.

Beverly Ryder is hanging in there with her research.

Marjorie Bianco Vernon now has the location of her ancestral villages in Bohemia!

Virgina Kelley found her grandfather's ancestral village by looking at his old medical records!!!

I am looking forward to a trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. I will be researching military records. Will report to you in June!

Well, here is "The Dumpling Newsletter" Click on this link www.zorainc.com/newsletter or if you prefer copy and past the URL in your browser. I decided to send the newsletter this way instead of email because I didn't want any part of it to get lost along the way. It's also a big file and would have taken some time to get to you.
