Greetings!!

Many thanks to Jo Herber for bringing the cheesecake, JoAnn Pasek for bringing the grapes, Mara Pitkithly for bringing the coffee cake and Barb Howes for bringing the snicker doodles!!!

Next meeting is April 3, 2010, 9:30 to Noon Fire Station #22 in Kirkland Look at our website for the 2010 meetings!! https://sites.rootsweb.com/~wacsig/calendar.html

We discussed the Friends of Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago. Many of our ancestors lived in Chicago for a while before moving on. I have a new bunch of flyers for joining them. By visiting the graves there I found pictures of my Kratina relatives. They have a card catalog of people buried there which also could be of genealogical help.

New Attendee BARBARA HOWES from Whidbey Island is researching the surnames Ihnat & Koscelnik from the Jestreb and Bakov areas in Slovakia. Now Barb needs to get the information from the Slovak regional archives. A relative is doing the research here in the USA. She is doing the homeland research.

A SUCCESS STORY! JERRY JANDACKA came to a precious meeting and met Marty Manor, who knew someone near Jerry's ancestral villages. The friend of the Marty's (who just retired from the regional archive) produced information back to the 1700s for Jerry. Then Jerry got a researcher to do more for him. He is now in touch with his family over there and will visit in May! Wow! Double WOW! So both Jerry and Barb were getting all kinds of research information from the Collie Liska, Jo Herber and Millie Stanton, avid Slovak researchers!!!

MILLIE STANTON brought the most beautiful BIG picture of her grandparents from 1908. It is framed so nicely!! While reviewing papers that she had read quite a while back, Millie noticed that her grandfather had a second "last name" on some of those pictures. Since there were different Benedict families, maybe Mikul was written after Benedict to set them apart from other Benedict families? Any one have other ideas about this?

JO HERBER brought lovely garnets, a wood butter mold, cut glass items, and tiger eye beads in a necklace to share.

COLLIE LISKA brought his Modra pottery vase and the cutest pottery wall hanging with a lady in national costume from Slovakia.

JoANN PASEK brought a display board that she made for her son's heritage sharing in third grade. It was a three part display board with the flag and then descriptions of various culture and economic factors. Along with a Czech-English dictionary she had a book with the folk story she was read as a child.

MARA PITKETHLY brought a bag full of little wooden Czech toys to share! Little, creative and fun toys!! Mara also reminded us about Cesky Stul. Cesky Stul is an established, on-going Czech conversation group that follows the University of Washington schedule. They meet every other Tuesday during the Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters. If there's a Czech class during Summer, they will be meeting then, too. All Czech speakers are invited to visit the Czech table whenever U Czech classes are in session. Cesky Stul meets at the Continental Restaurant, 4549 University Way NE, Seattle. For more information, call 206-632-4700 or email [email protected] .

ED SCHULTZ shared an article in the Chicago Czechoslovak September 2009 Koreny quarterly. It was about Jaroslav Cimera, Virtuoso Trumbonist. Did that ever open Ed's eyes. That was his family member!! Ed gleamed research information from the article!!!! And thank you, Ed, for the session on computer genealogy programs! Ed brings his computer to our meetings and does research on discussed topics. He looked this up for us to share:

2010 Seminar April 10, 2010 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Useless Bay Country Club in Langley.

The Genealogy Society of South Whidbey will hold our spring seminar featuring Dr. Stephen Morse, creator of the One Step Search Method which has unlocked information for thousands of genealogists in many databases on numerous websites.
