Czech/Slovak Interest Group Report- March 5, 2005

Pozdrav! That is greetings in Czech!

Another interesting meeting!! We had SUPER YUMMY kolacky ( from Marie Cameron) and sweet roliky (Karen Kucera), and Czech deviled eggs from Gladys Shipek!! I never found out who brought the red grapes, but thank you! What a treat!

Culture celebrations are always fun! Can't believe the beautiful items that were produced last Saturday!! To top it off while people ate, tried on costumes and looked at items, Tom Sernka played Bohemian folk songs. The mood was set so nicely that Darlene and Bettelinn had to polka! Me,too!

Lovely Chodsko pottery, nicely framed pictures, paper dolls, cut crystal, postcards, a beautiful doll, decorated easter eggs, a perfume bottle, a Brychta figurine, books and pieces to make up two folk costumes were displayed. Of course food is a great part of our culture, too!

Welcome to Milli Stanton who brought bags of kroj costume pieces, all hand done! Milli is researching Benadik, Malucky, Trnavsky, Lisy and Bohin form Slovakia thru Cleveland. Welcome to Karen Kucera who is researching Kucera and Kilka from Bohemia thru Cleveland. And Karen knows how to bake Bohemian breads! Yum! Welcome ladies.

Thanks again to Norb Ziegler for doing a great job with our website. Tom Sernka gave Norb his genealogy info at the last meeting. Viola! Someone saw it on goolge and contacted him.. it's a good bet that this is a third cousin! IF YOU HAVE NOT SENT NORB PERMISSION TO PUT YOUR INFORMATION ON OUR WEBSITE, DO SO NOW!!!!! Contact him from our website: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~wacsig/ CZECH IT OUT!

Florence Zarro is honing in on military records, looking for some help. Norb still waits to hear from the Slovakia Archives. Bev Ryder is really doing well. spending much time researching on the computer. Bev needs to find Castle Garden records on Ancestry.com. by going to the home page, hit search records, then New York passenger lists (which are 1851-1891) There you are! Bettelinn brought the information from the Pilsen Archives that she actually got herself... plus a beautiful aerial view of her village. Where did you get that , Bettelinn? Jo Heber is taking her grandchild to Slovakia and wanted a little help with traveling and the language. Collie Liska needs to see the 1851 Gazetteer from UW library, it was out being redone. How nice to see Juanita Dineen, she is using her genealogy skills cleaning out many years of papers in her home! Darlene Lang got her family interested in her research by doing a family cookbook! Marie Cameron is plugging away on her research, too, besides making great kolacky. Marie's hubby decided he might have some Slavic blood in him, too. Gladys and Bob Shipek again helped with organization. THANK YOU!

MARCH 12 FAMILY ROOTS FAIR AT CROSSROADS MALL. From 10 AM to 4 PM, there will be folk dancing booths, historical societies, books for sale, interest group booths (like ours) and software companies showing their stuff .

NEXT MEETINGS!!! APRIL 16 AND JUNE 11, 2005

MAY 14 AND 15 WILL BE SLAVIC DAYS AT UW. I WILL GET MORE INFO SOON, PUT THE DATE ON YOUR CALENDAR!!

HAPPY RESEARCHING! Rosie
