Articles Relating to Czech-Slovak Research

Greetings!

We fun we had!! And we had great treats, thanks to many of you!!!

A big welcome to PAT and BOB CAIN who are researching Pat's maiden name of Kahanec ( In Slovakia) and then changed to Kahanetz here for phonetic reasons. They believe that Levoca is the ancestral village. What wonderful help they received from our attendees!! ED SCHULTZ was right next to them doing lookups on his computer!!! Ed has been doing a lot of historical research lately. KATARINA MUHOTOVA helped Cains with identification of what the name is in the old country. Bob Cain found our group through the internet.

And a big welcome to KATARINA! Katarina was born in Slovakia and now has her own business here in the states. She brought her sister's lovely Slovak calendars to show & sell and two basketfuls of Slovak gingerbread hearts, corn husks dolls & bookmarks and handmade angels to sell for a special charity in Slovakia. Katarina also brought her knowledge to share which we appreciated so much!!!

HELEN LOWE is excited that she is having the Czech garnets she inherited repaired. Helen is looking for someone who has loose Czech garnets to sell to complete hers. This following website is just to let you read about garnets and how important they are to Czech culture and ladies. http://www.bohemian-garnet-jewelry.com/introduction.html Now that Helen has had her DNA tested she is anxious to know what it means! Bob Cain suggest this book: Bryan Sykes:, Saxons, Vikings, and Celts: The Genetic Roots of Britain and Ireland. The book describes a systematic, ten-year DNA study of more than 10,000 volunteers. Anyone interested in genealogy and DNA will learn from this book. Remember the Slavs have Celtic blood!!

CAROL STEINHAUER shared her beautiful Slovak & Czech trip album. She was also just brimming with finds, one of which is information about ancestors who came via St Lawrence River into Canada first!!!!! Next, this site, Slovakia Genealogy Research Strategies is packed full of treasures!!! http://www.iabsi.com/gen/public/ Carol has read THE SOJOUN by Andrew Krivak. She said it is a must read!! http://andrewkrivak.com/books/the-sojourn

NORB ZIEGLER methodically went thru the 1940 Census information for the block where he grew up in Chicago. He was amazed at its ethnicity makeup, what their jobs were, how much they made, etc. As a kid none of this was apparent to him, but now as an adult who is searching his roots it means so much more. This brought on a discussion concerning how these areas are changed! ALSO,REMEMBER THAT THE CGSI 2013 CONFERENCE IS IN CHICAGO, October 23- 26. The Dec 2012 CGSI quarterly Nase Rodina was dedicated to early Czechs a & Slovaks in Chicago.

MARTHA SOLTESZ has found the Hungarian records for her village and needed help with reading the info. Thanks again to Katarina for giving Martha hope!. Martha is reading AMERICA BC by Barry Fell about old old languages. The subject is quite interesting to us all, but remember that it is a controversial book which was not received well in the field of academia.

MARY ANN SOLTESZ googled herself. She came up as attending these meetings. That brought aobut a discussion concerning people wanting their names listed in this report. So, if folks don't want their name listed, they will tell me.

We have an excited JOANN PASEK! She has received a letter back from relatives in her ancestral village. A younger member of that family translated it into English for her. So a trip to the Czech Republic is imminent! Such a wonderful success story. We love these!! And on the home front, JoAnn is now in touch with a cousin in Bellevue that had been cut off from her due to a family problem. The family problem has passed away. JO Ann called me after our meeting Saturday. She and her cousin had a wonderful visit!!!!!!

JANET HRONES was so pleased to read Tom Hadd's reading suggestion in a previous Tidbit. THE COAST OF BOHEMIA by Derek Sayer is a must read!!!! She was pleased to hear Madeleine Albright is coming to Seattle February 23rd, too. Janet suggest that Helen go to the Settle Genealogy Socity's DNA group meeting to learn more about her DNA results.

As promised, I told about the tour groups that also helps make arrangements to visit ancestral towns. I passed around the 2013 flyers from Mark Bigaouettes' Heritage Tours. Helene Cincebeaux has Treasure Tours. Hana Matousek leads tours 952.440.4289. There is a chance she will put on a travel program for us. Weber Travel in Chicago puts on tours. http://www.webertravel.com/default.asp?pid=13620 I have had positive feedback about these groups. There are many more, but I do not have first hand info about them. Some of my suggestions have small groups, some have big groups.

After that discussion, Ed put this first website on the screen. He wrote his name using the German script. Very interesting!! We need to be familiar with this script when studying entries in archive records. Then he did other names, go ahead and play with this .

Through www.familysearch.com you can find genealogical terms translated from Czech, and Slovak, too.

Next meeting is March 2nd, 2013. Emily Kranz will tell about her experience being an exchange student in Kladno, CR and hosting the Kladno student here in the US. We are hoping that Antonie and Marketa, exchange students from Prague, will join us from Olympia.

Mark your calendar, June 22 Mary Kozy will give a talk on Intergrating DNA Information and Genealogy. Then there is a meeting April 27, also.

Happy Researching,

Rosie
