ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT REGULAR MEETING: March 6, 2010, 9:30 to Noon FireStation #22

Feb.14th the Lodge Krasna Budoucnost NO. 22 from Malin, OR is having their annual Jiternice Festival, at the Tulelake, CA Fairgrounds. It is a long ways from here, but IF you are near there? It starts at noon, then the Czech dancers will dance and sing. Here is the map!!! http://www.recreationparks.net/CA/siskiyou/butte-valley-fairgrounds-tulelake-tule-lake

People were asking when the 1940 Census will be released. Ed Schultz writes this:

By law, census details cannot be released before 72 years have passed - therefore the 1940 census will be released in 2012. From what I heard, Ancestry, Footnote and perhaps others, are working with the Census bureau to start transcribing early so that indexes will be available early on. Of course both have current "1940 substitutes" on line right now (mostly directories.)

REMEMBER! Our website is https://sites.rootsweb.com/~wacsig/index.html/ Czech it out! It has ALL of our meeting dates for this year! Put them on your calendar!

MEETING report:

Welcome to new member ROSI HENDRICKSON from Whidlbey Island. Rosi is researching the surname Tomasek from Leskovec, Moravia. The arrival port was Galveston. Together we found her village on the map. Rosi shared with National Genealogical Society Conference is in Salt Lake City: http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/cs/conference_info/ and there will be an emphasis onEastern European research.

MARY KLANDER had her mtDNA done through Family Tree DNA and found she is Haplogroup V, which is rare! She also had luck using Facebook to find some Norwegian ancestors. Mary had her genealogy notebook along to share with folks, too.

JANET ROACH shared that her brother, Steven Hrones, will have an article in the upcoming March Nase Rodina!! Janet's sister found their ancestral village by Googling their ancestor's surname. Lucky! Janet continues to take Czech Language class at UW with Jara Soldanova.

GERRY LOVCIK walked in the door with a copy of Pisek The First Century, A History of Pisak, ND, and its People! The book will be in my library until I donate it to the CGSI Library or the Cedar Rapids Library. Lovcik seems to be on every third page!! Thank you, Gerry! Gerry is also very interested in the Czechoslovak Legion from WWI.

JO HERBER came to get motivated to do more research, but meanwhile had her full mtDNA done thru Family Tree DNA! People want Jo Herber's recipe for the spiced nuts that she brought! Here it is!!! Thanks, JO!

SPICED NUTS

1 lb. pecans or walnut halves

1/2 cup sugar

2 1/2 tbsp. corn oil

1 Tbsp. vanilla

1/4 tsp. salt

1/8 tsp. pepper

1/4 tsp. ground coriander

1/4 tsp. cinnamon

1/4 tsp. nutmeg

1/4 tsp. allspice

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Blanch nuts for 1 minute in boiling water. Drain well. While still hot, put in a bowl and toss with sugar, oil and vanilla. Let stand 10 minutes. Arrange on rimmed baking tray. Bake for 30-35 minutes, turning every 5-10 minutes until nuts are light brown and crispy. Combine the salt, pepper, coriander, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. Put the still-hot nuts into a bowl and toss with seasoning mixture. Spread in a single layer on paper towels to cool. Store in an airtight container. Note: Do not double this recipe. Make single batches one-at-a-time.

BARB CALLAHAN is brimming over with good news. She has been invited to a family wedding in Slovakia. So... she is organizing a family reunion for the same time! Plus... a Slovak relative will be in Houston at the time she travels through there. And perhaps she can bring a Slovak relative to one of our meetings this spring!

JOAN & HARVE KNIZEK are busy! Joan has been going through the SOUPIS PODDANYCH PODLE VIRY 1651 books looking for Knizeks while Harve is talking Silvie Opatna's Czech Converstational Class. The internet helped them find a cousin in California!

JOANN PASEK shared viewing "I Served the King of England." It is a Czech movie worth seeing. She found Czech beads at her local bead store and brought the Group Health article on knowing your health history. I found her Kacer relatives in the SOUPIS PODDANYCH PODLE VIRY 1651 - Kourimsko. Now JoAnn can fill in the gaps of her research!!!

MIKE MECHAM is focusing on his Italian roots now, and is now very interested in his family health history ... especially diabetes.

MARA PITHKETHLY reminded us about Cesky Stul, a time to speak Czech & Slovak with the UW Czech language students. Cesky Stul meets every other Tuesday at the Continental Restaurant, 4549 University Way NE, Seattle. For more information, call 206-632-4700 or email [email protected].

Thank you to all who made this another great meeting!!!

HAPPY RESEARCHING!
