Articles Relating to Czech-Slovak Research

Greetings! We had an interesting meeting, We started our fifth year with 22 of us there, doing a lot of sharing, and eating. MANY THANKS to Mara and Vili for bringing treats. I brought a box of oplatky and the kolacky that Ruze picked up Saturday morning from the Czech Bakery in West Seattle WERE EXCELLENT! YUM, YUM!!!!!!

We had three new people at our meeting. Florence Zarro is researching the names Filo and Uhlarik from Durina and Suja in the Slovak republic. Alix Clare is researching Blazek, Skrable, Shilhanek and Kozak from Plzen, Losina and Tabor in the Czech Republic. Diane Pruett is researching Klement, Stehno, Newbauer and Batek from Zalesi in the Czech Republic. SO NICE TO MEET ALL OF YOU!!

The book HISTORY OF SLOVAKS IN AMERICA will be ready in the summer. Write me if you are interested in buying a copy.

Many of us found the village crests for our ancestral villages. Martha found hers on the internet and printed them off for us. Ruze had hers uniquely on an original drawing that was given to her. Eric had information on his from town's 700 year birthday celebration information. Juanita liked the unofficial crest on Eric's Czech shirt... a mug of beer!!!!

Gladys and Bob Shipek brought a big Czech flag to display AND Czech music for our break which Wilie thoroughly enjoyed! Jacqui did a great jog of cleaning out her periodicals to put on the free table. Most disappeared very fast.thanks, Jacqui!! Juanita brought a unique 2003 Czech calendar to share. Cheri found research information form the Mormon Church for us, so we enjoyed those handouts. Pesceks are getting ready for their trip to the Pilsen area this summer. Ray Marik is looking forward to his trip to the CR this March and is trying to find information to help him do research there. We all agree Mary Kizer has a big challenge, but she is diligent!! Mary Trimingham plans to go to the CGSI Conference in Houston TX in the fall of 2003, is Darlene interested, too? Mara told us about the Czech group form the University that speaks Czech once a week near the campus, and about the Czech Literature presentation on campus Jan. 27. I sent the information out already. If you didn't get it write me!

After the break, Jean Heath, Darlene, Allan and Julie Pescek, Erik, Cheri and I did a little study on how to use the 1651 religious census.
