Czech/Slovak Interest Group Meeting Report - January 21, 2006

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Great Meeting!

Many thanks for all the food which appeared!! (Twenty-three of us appeared, also) Yum!! What a feast! Kolachy, cookies, goodies, and breads. Gladys Shipek brought good soup to nourish us on this cool winter day. The food appeared so fast I could not keep track of whom brought what!!

We had time for Gladys' report on A BOY of OLD PRAGUE by Sulamith Ish-Kishor. Gives us a deeper understanding of what life was like for our ancestors. Then Collie Liska told a little more about finding family in Slovakia. Fred Gessner shared research skills on eBay. He found the Slovak music he is collecting!

Welcome to two new attendees! Lee James is from Olympia. Kohout, Kalat, Czedik and Slama are some of the names he is researching. (The rest will be on our website.) Cleveland OH and Woodbine IA are the places here and Veseli nad Luznici neat Tabor is the place in the CR.

Mavis Dvorak Stears is from Tacoma and related to Allan Piscek. Ask for that story!! Mavis has Nebraska roots and is researching Dvorak, Folda, Bazata, Belina, Kuzel, Kohout, Miskovsky and Vacha. The places in the CR are Holovosy, Strakonice, Drahobudic, Kourim and Prosovice.

Julie and Allan brought Tom Zahn to us from Seatac. Tom's plane was on time! So after a break Tom answered questions ranging from name variations to use of the Kadrastal maps. His knowledge of the Czech and Slovak history intertwined with the questions asked. He showed an example of the Kadrastral Maps on DVD. The good news is the the Czech government is now copying these great maps. The maps are also available in the Slovak Republic but are not colored. Tom's PATHFINDERS guided Bettelynn Brown and Mary Trimmingham to their ancestral villages, so it was nice for them to all visit. Lee James finally got a chance to met Tom after communicating with him on genealogy research. Tom ended his talk with a special Slovak song.
