SKOKOMISH MT County

Grave of Carl Putven b. 4 Sep 1892 - d. 10 Jan 1913

Located just past Boulder Creek Bridge on Forest Road #35 (off U.S. 101 across road from Hamma Hamma store)

There is a historical marker near grave site. It says" Near here is grave of Carl Putven, pioneer, trapper and explorer b. Sep 4, 1892 - Jan 10 1913."

Carl Putven lived with his wife and half brother and young son in a cabin in the meadows above the grave site. (Up what is now known as Putven Trail.) Carl had gone out for supplies and apparently stopped along the trail on the way home. He was found frozen to death sitting by the trail, the supplies in his pack. His family started to pack his body out but it was too difficult, as they buried him near the present site. A railroad track was put through the area where the grave was and the grave was moved nearby to its presnet site.

Information on the Putven family (from the Marriage records of Mason County)

Marietta Putven - mother of Carl married ____ Moody in 1915. Carl's father had drowned while the family lived on Camano Island. Marietta Putven was born in Lower Lake, CA. Her parents were C.P. Stanton and Alice Floder. Carl's wife's name was Ada Richards and she was born in VA.

It wasn't measured, but it is about 10 miles up Forest Road #25 from U.S. 101 to the grave. Putven Trail begins about 1/4 mile beyond the grave site. It is a steep trail. Wood from the cabin used to be seen in the area but it is unknown if there is any still there.

Information by Vivian Boerger from Mildred Putven, daughter-in-law of Carl Putven.

TOMBSTONE TERRITORY - TAHUYA Cemetery

Located about 3 miles west of Tahuya, there is a sign on the post that says "Tombstone Territory," and a wooden grave marker.

1. Sacred to the Memory of Nancy Kirkland
Who departed this Life Dec 27, 1863 aged 45 years

2. Unmarked grave of negroes who drowned from swamped boat; marked with rocks.

According to Mrs. Frances Huson of Tahuya (Oct 1974):
"Tombstone Territory" is not the burial site. The actual graves are under the county highway. The owner of the nearby property, Mr. Frost, rescued the original Nancy Kirkland tombstone and imbedded it in the fireplace of the new home he was building, so it would not be stolen or vandalized."

"In the late 1800s, not sure of the date, five negroes were put off a steamboat into a rowboat to come ashore. It was rough water and the rowboat overturned. Three negroes drowned and were buried near the spot where they washed ashore. One of the negroes was Rodney White, who homesteaded at Maggie Lake. When he was quite old he died in Seattle and was buried there. The other negro who survived went to farm somewhere beyond Hoodsport; never knew his name."

According to the 1880 census:
#36 Kirkland, Moses w m 74 w farmer MS SC SC
Kirkland, William w m 43 son s laborer 2 mo. LA MS LA
Sennit, William w M 25 employee s farm laborer 2 mo. Can Ire Ire
#21.Kirkland, Aaron w M 27 employee of Albert Roundby
---------------- s 4mo laborer LA NC LA

From death records:
Wm Kirland died 23 Jan 1891 age 60 M W single - place of death unknown; died of Quick consumption; farmer - lived in Mason County.

The following tombstones were found at the home of the Harvey Redsland place at Bald Point, about 2 miles west of "Tombstone Territory." According to Ed Cokelet and Tom Davis, who visited the area on Aug 7, 1979, the tombstones were used to prop up an old canoe and there was no evidence of any graves nearby.
