Queries

I will post your queries here. E-mail Genealogy queries to Sue using the subject heading: "Rutland County, Vermont Queries". Please note: Since I, Sue, live in Colorado, I do not have access to much in the way of research materials for Vermont. If you send me an inquiry about an ancestor, I will treat it as a query to be posted rather than answer you directly. Thanks!
Sue reserves the right to edit or delete any query you wish to post. Submitting a query via e-mail is an acknowledgment of your agreement to allow her to post, edit or delete your query, & use your e-mail address for replies to your post. In order to post your query, please do not use all capitals letters, except for surnames included, which should be in a caps. I will not post any query which comes to me in all capital letters (this requires me to completely re-write the query so that it is readable.) All queries MUST pertain directly to a person or persons residing in Rutland County and must mention the connection.

I am looking for the parents of Noyes JONES born 1808 Mar 31. Two census show two different places. One VT one NY.. Since other related family members are from Rutland Co. I wonder if he had family here also. His wife Susan MADISON, b1818 Mar 24, (Mattison?) was supposedly born VT or MA again census variants. I also found kin in Bennington area...but that is a neighbor.

GILRAINE, DYER, HALL
Calling all GILRAINEs! Does anyone of that surname still live in the area? I am searching for information on my grandfather's first wife, Sarah Elizabeth GILRAINE or GILRAIN, who was born to James GILRAINE and Mary DYER on June 13, 1869 in Rutland Township. She married my grandfather, Allen Marvin HALL of Isle La Motte, Vermont, on October 16, 1896 in Lynn, Massachusetts. Though Sarah died of "childbed fever" shortly after the birth of her second daughter in 1900, her family stayed in close contact with the HALLs for a number of years, and my late father remembered them as a sprited, feisty, fun-loving Irish bunch from Rutland. I would love to find out more about Sarah's background, in part because I am her namesake. Thank you, Sarah Elizabeth Hall. (posted 24 Sep 2001).

OWEN, NEWELL

Thank you, Lois Franz. (posted 20 Sep 2001).

PERRY, SMITH
I am trying to locate information on a James Samuel PERRY born Dec. 22, 1819, in Middletown, VT. According to the family bible it is Middletown, not Middletown Springs, but it could be a mistaken. He then migrated to Rockford, IL where he married Lydia SMITH (b Maine), then to Le Sueur County, Sibley County, and Blue Earth County MN. In the 1870 census for Blue Earth County one child is listed as living with Lucius DYER, also of Vermont. Any information is greatly appreciated. Lisa Perry (posted 19 Aug 2001).

HIGGINS, GRAY
I am trying to find a birth record for Bertha J. HIGGINS, aka "Birdie." She was born Abt. 1884 in Rutland Co., VT -- possibly Proctor. She married John William GRAY and gave birth to at least three children, with the third, George William (my grandfather) born in 1904. I am also hoping to find Birdie's marriage record to John William. In a wild guess, I would say they married in either 1900 or 1901.
If anyone can find anything or knows anything about my great-grandmother, I would be very grateful to hear from them!

COGSWELL
I am searching for information on parents of Tryphena COGSWELL, daughter of John. Tryphena was born possibly April, 1781 Vermont. She married William MARTIN in 1808. Her mother's name may have also been Tryphena. E.O. Jameson's book, "Cogswells in America" places Tryphena in a John COGSWELL family (page 261). This John is listed as having lived in Vermont, in the vicinity of Whitehall, NY. John and Hannah Roys COGSWELL of Whitehall, NY, do not appear to be Tryphena's parents.
