PROGIN, PROGEN FAMILY

This is not a branch of the old French-Canadian family

of Prejean, as one might think, but one of much more recent

immigration to Canada.During the War of 1812, the British

hired two Swiss mercenary regiments, the Regiment de Meuron

and the Regiment de Watteville, for service in Canada.

These regiments were demobilized in Canada at the end of

the war. From the date of marriage and birthplace for the

following man, it is highly probable that he was a veteran

of one of these two regiments.

The marriage of Francois Progin and Belonise Martel is listed in the index to the records of the parish of St-Cyprien-de-Napierville for the year 1843, so a check would verify the parentage of both parties. It is missing from the _repertoire_.
